Okay I had the same problem. Turns out you really have to push the SD card in pretty hard. It should be flush with the base (as in not sticking out at all). Did that worked like a charm.

Here is what you do. You take out the tiny Memory card and blow on and it, and blow i the inside. Then insert memory card. Take out batteries and put the batteries back in. Push Power and Start Recording., Chaow

Try checking your manuel for specifically named memory card, sometimes certain cameras can only take certain memory card formats.
