MOWER PROBLEM STILL!

Hooked up the new starter solenoid and coneected everything right. when I turn the key though there still is nothing. I connected the jumper cables to the battery and it sparked so there is still juice. When I turn the key however, the time clock on the dash doesn't even turn on. could this be a problem with the key?

SOURCE: turnover problem with toro 16-42z riding mower

A fully charged battery should read a minimum of 12.65, if it does not and connections and grounds are dirty then that's your problem. Start with a none fully charged battery. If you can bypass the solenoid and start it then the culprit is the solenoid. Good luck. donnyb60

Unfortunately yes. From what i understand , power is going into the solenoid but not coming out, resulting in the starter not activating. Good news though, new solenoids are pretty cheap and not that difficult to replace. Included is a tutorial on a similar mower . 1998 massey 1250 diesel tractor has a new battery but will not turn over. When you turn the key everything go off and does not turn the starter

Question ,was it running before this happened

If so ,try and turn the crank shaft ,if it turns then the problem is either a battery cable , check connections at battery and starter and also the ground .

If this fails , take a pair of jumper cables hook to battery with out battery cables hooked up .

Then hook ground from jumper cables to frame and positive to large stud on starter solinoid , take screw driver touch large post of starter to small post on starter solenoid if it just clicks or does nothing replace starter.

Be very careful these are large amperage's your working with ,and can be dangerous ! if not comfortable with this method then just take starter out and have it tested in town.

Well, if your starter starts to turn when you hook the battery cable up, then you have hooked the cable to the wrong post on the starter. You have two large posts and one small post on the starter solenoid, the battery cable goes on the large post that has nothing else hooked to it. The other large post should have a large braided cable going into the starter motor housing. If the starter still will not turn the engine over when it is wired correctly then you will need to look closer at the flywheel ring gear.

could have faulty starter or starter solenoid.hook test light make you a test light with longer wires and 12 volt bulb with socket go junk yard find good bulb with socket.hook test light to starter and see if test light lights up if so your starter or starter solenoid has a open winding. if test light dont light up could have blowed fuse to transmission neutral switch or neutral switch could be bad.try to start vechicle in neutral if vechicle starts your transmission neutral switch out of adjustment or neutral switch faulty check make sure wires going to neutral switch is damaged.

Mower was running for 15 minutes and I did a couple passes in the lawn, needed to get off for a minute so turned mower off...it will not restart. All I hear is a click when I turn the key.

I would check and clean battery connections and cable from positive terminal to solenoid and from solenoid to starter. If after every connection is clean check voltage from battery. It should be around 12.5 -13 volts d.c.. You can try to jump start it by hooking up jumper cables and make sure that it is in neutral, set break or hold down on brake pedal to close safty switch. You can manually engage seat safty switch and try to start. If it still does nothing but click I would replace battery and/or solenoid. I hope this helps you. Thanks.

Everything turns on when key is turned, but engine doesnt turn, starter doesnt click, nothing...just recently replaced starter and alternator and nuetral switch (its a manual)..could it be the solenoid?

If you have verified that the battery has 12volts, and there is power 12V at the trigger wire on the solenoid with the key turned to start, likely the solenoid is bad...I'd question this though because the solenoid comes with the starter and therefore should be new. (defective?) If there's no power there, re-check what you replaced and also ignition switch.

Won't Start

unbolt the starter, and try it, to see if it turns over. make sure it is grounded or it won't turn. next turn the engine over, to make sure it isn't locked up, if everything looks ok then put the starter back on, check the voltage at the battery, a fully charged battery will read up to 13 volts, check your wires from the battery to the solenoid. make sure the eyes on the ends of the cables are making good contact. If the wires get hot you need to make new ones, this normally means it isn't making a good connection, and low voltage going into you're starter will make a spark in the windings and ruin the starter. It would be a good idea to use a little heavier wire than the facctory did . If you get power to the solenoid and when you hold the key in start psition you dont have any power on the other side of it,and you can hear it clicking, you will need a new solenoid, which would mean this was the cause of the problem. If everything is ok put your meter on the battery and try to start it. if it drops below 10 volts you might not have a high enough cranking amps battery.

After motor work starter runs when power applied

sounds like starter solenoid is staying energized sending continued power to starter. need to make sure you plugged the right wire from the starter button and not another hot wire w/ fulltime hot. also if thats ok need to test for power turning off to solenoid when releasing button. if thats ok try tapping on solenoid. lastly, make sure your positive cable from battery is hooked to starter solenoid, then another hot cable(longer) hooks from solenoid to starter, if you hook long hot cable directly from starter to battery, starter will continueous spin.

Check the small wire on the starter to see if you are getting 12v there with the key turned. If you are, then it is possible that the starter (&or solenoid) that checked out good last year is not good now. If no power at small wire, then check neutral safety switch.
