My hard drive died and I do not know my wep key. All of my passwords were on the dead hard drive. One other computer in the house is on the wireless network with the wep key but mine is not. How do I get the wep key for my computer? Do I have to do something special since I have a new hard drive. My computer can pick up other connections but my wireless connection called "animator" I cannot access.
Thanks for helping.
Looks like you will have to login to the router from the other computer to find the key. Usually, the address to the router admin screens is one of the following: 192.168.0.1 Linksys 192.168.1.1 NetGear 192.168.10.100 Motorola Generally 192.168.1.1 will work for most. Default Login: Login = admin Password = password (default - if this doesn't work, then you will need to find it or initialize the router) Go to the WEP security Screen NetGear EXAMPLE: Security Encryption (WEP) Authentication Type *Automatic* Encryption Strength *64bit* (64 bit is sufficient - the network overhead is less than 128 bit) Security Encryption (WEP) Key (The active key below is marked with *) Passphrase *Blank* Key 1 abcdabcdab (64 bit examples = 10 hex digits 128 bit will be longer string) Key 2 dcbadcbadc Key 3 123456789a Key 4 *Blank* Click logout when finished
Wireless Network Menu Wireless Network Mode Mixed Wireless Network Name (SSID) MyWireless Wireless Channel 7 - 2.442 GHZ Wireless SSID Broadcast Enable Wireless Security Security Mode WEP Default Transmit Key 1 (This is the active key) WEP Encryption 64 bits (or 128 bits) Passphrase Key 1 abcdabcdab Key 2 dcbadcbadc Key 3 123456789a Key 4 There is no logout for the LinkSys. Just disconnect
Here's an easier method that doesn't entail having to log in to your router. Provided you've got another Windows computer that's
already connected to your wireless network, this free program will
allow to to retrieve and view the network's WEP key:
There's a very easy way, which will prevent all such problems, in case you forgot the router password because usually by default it's:
Suppose IP is: 192.168.1.1 then
Username is : admin
Password is : admin
In case you are failing to control your router, there's a small reset press from the back of the router machine, you have to press it with a very thin pin for 5 seconds, and then go again to the router:
Go to quick start and make the configuration. In case the configuration is belong an adsl, you have to contact the free line of customer help line for the technical section in order to get the configuration of your adsl and to make your InterNet working.
Try such option and inform me if you need anything
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Connect your router to computer with lan cable then you can access it with default link
http://192.168.1.1 then type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password" then you can see settings of router.
Click on wireless then wireless security WEP key note down the code it is your password to connect wireless.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.
Hi dkusner, Welcome to Fixya. If you need your Wep/Wpa Key (Passphrase) we can access the Wireless Settings Page of the router to obtain the information needed.
To access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access your router you need to use a computer that is connected to it. Open a Browser then type 192.168.0.1 or http://routerlogin.net. The Default username is admin and the password is password. Password is case sensitive.
Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key (Wep/Wpa Key) or Passphrase. The Network Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure. Network Key is case sensitive.
Don't forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya
If you forgot WEP key for your router you just need to log into the router and look up the key. If you do not know the Admin password for your router then you will have to do a hard reset of the router.
The links below are examples of what steps you woudl need to go through to look up the WEP info on your router.
The wep key is for the wireless router. It is the password. If you enabled wep security on your wireless router and created a password, it is the password you created. If this is someone else's wireless network you will not know what their password is.
If you don't know the key, and you don't have a computer that has the ability to display the password for the wireless for you, the only other way you can retrieve the password is by plugging in directly to the 2wire, logging into it, and either getting the password as it is listed by the 2wire, or resetting the password to something new.
If it was not setup with a WEP key then try "admin" that is the password for Linksys when not set up. The purpose of the WEP key is to install a password to type in before anyone can use your network. So if "admin" does not work then you have to ask the person who set up the Wireless Network what the WEP key is.
By SSD I assume you are refering to a Solid State Drive to replace your existing hard drive. If this is the case you need to install the drive and then boot off the CD that came with your computer and reinstall the operating system. Note that all you old info will still be on the original hard drive but you can still access it by purchasing a 2.5 inch USB hard drive enclosure. When you plug it into a USB port it will be detected as a second hard drive.
You can find the complete manual here. Go to page 62 and read from there. You want to change form "Open System" to "Shared Key" You have to enable WEP and use 256-bit encryption, which gives you a key length of 29 characters. Choose them as randomly as possible, but copy them to a text document. This way you can copy them to a USB drive and deploy it to your computers without re-typing it over and over again.
Just a note: WEP encryption is fairly easy to crack if you know what you're doing. Nevertheless it is better than nothing, but it should not give you a false impression of security. Just google "crack WEP" and you get over a million results...
In order for you to find your routers address, click START, RUN, type CMD followed by RETURN or ENTER, and type IPCONFIG/ALL followed by RETURN or ENTER. Look for DEFAULT GATEWAY. Put that address in your browser to access it.
