How do I find out my wep key

My hard drive died and I do not know my wep key. All of my passwords were on the dead hard drive. One other computer in the house is on the wireless network with the wep key but mine is not. How do I get the wep key for my computer? Do I have to do something special since I have a new hard drive. My computer can pick up other connections but my wireless connection called "animator" I cannot access.
Thanks for helping.

Looks like you will have to login to the router from the other computer to find the key.
Usually, the address to the router admin screens is one of the following:
192.168.0.1 Linksys
192.168.1.1 NetGear
192.168.10.100 Motorola
Generally 192.168.1.1 will work for most.
Default Login:
Login = admin
Password = password (default - if this doesn't work, then you will need to find it or initialize the router)
Go to the WEP security Screen
NetGear EXAMPLE:
Security Encryption (WEP)
Authentication Type *Automatic*
Encryption Strength *64bit* (64 bit is sufficient - the network overhead is less than 128 bit)
Security Encryption (WEP) Key (The active key below is marked with *)
Passphrase *Blank*
Key 1 abcdabcdab (64 bit examples = 10 hex digits 128 bit will be longer string)
Key 2 dcbadcbadc
Key 3 123456789a
Key 4 *Blank*
Click logout when finished

LinkSys Example:

Wireless Network Menu
Wireless Network Mode Mixed
Wireless Network Name (SSID) MyWireless
Wireless Channel 7 - 2.442 GHZ
Wireless SSID Broadcast Enable
Wireless Security
Security Mode WEP
Default Transmit Key 1 (This is the active key)
WEP Encryption 64 bits (or 128 bits)
Passphrase
Key 1 abcdabcdab
Key 2 dcbadcbadc
Key 3 123456789a
Key 4
There is no logout for the LinkSys. Just disconnect

Here's an easier method that doesn't entail having to log in to your router. Provided you've got another Windows computer that's already connected to your wireless network, this free program will allow to to retrieve and view the network's WEP key:

I hope this helps.

There's a very easy way, which will prevent all such problems, in case you forgot the router password because usually by default it's:
Suppose IP is: 192.168.1.1 then
Username is : admin
Password is : admin
In case you are failing to control your router, there's a small reset press from the back of the router machine, you have to press it with a very thin pin for 5 seconds, and then go again to the router:
192.168.1.1
user: admin
pass: admin
Go to quick start and make the configuration. In case the configuration is belong an adsl, you have to contact the free line of customer help line for the technical section in order to get the configuration of your adsl and to make your InterNet working.

Try such option and inform me if you need anything

No bootable device..insert boot disk and press any key. What do i need to do?

This means one of two things, either your HDD died, lost it's format, or your bios was reset with no hard drive enabled. The best way to determine if your hard drive is dead or not is to put a windows boot CD in the CD Drive and restart the computer, CTRL-ALT-DEL and watch the boot sequence. Dell computers have the F12 key to select an alternate boot device, other pc's may have CTL-ESC or some other key. Anyway just select the CD to boot from and try to install windows when it gets to the Target selection if the C: drive is available then the drive might still be viable, if not replace your HDD and try again. Google HDD Replacement on your pc's model number, it will help. Good Luck

Cannot get internet access on a laptop because we do not know the "network security key" on an HP laptop through a Cisco Lynksis router.

Some later model wireless routers have the Password (ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router and this information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adapters in your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit your requirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorized access. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cable from your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computer and enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login and password and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID and Encryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 to generate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to 63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born in January 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop, configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptops can communicate with your wireless router.

Hy i have laptop dell x 300 latitudine and i dont now the password

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. At the first text on the screen or when the Dell™ logo appears, tap <F2> until the message Entering Setup appears.
  3. Fro there disable the System and Hard Drive Passwords.
  4. F10 to save and exit.
new_note.jpg Note: Some older Dell computers use an alternate key sequence instead of <F2> to enter System Setup. These key sequences include:
  • <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Enter>
  • <Delete>
  • <Fn>+<F1> (laptop computers only)
  • <Fn>+<Esc> (laptop computers only)

I have a computer with a dead hard drive. I would

See if you can boot a CD or DVD with Ubuntu on it.
They are generally recognized very well on IBM and Lenovo laptop computers. You will be able to run the OS entirely off the CD without touching the hard drive, access the internet, etc.

You may be able to see and mount the file system of your dead or failing hard drive and select your working files off it.... Don't bother to recover your OS, or products for which you already have installation media or other backups....

Just grab your pictures, music, documents, etc. that matter to you.

If the disk you have uses S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring, then you can try using the disk utility to read its state ( System > Administration > Disk Utility ). This should tell you whether you disk is dead or something else may have happened to your system to make it look your hard drive died.

Good luck!

Message saying media test failure, exiting pXE ROM and operating system not found. Cannot get anywhere thereafter. can get into F12 and F2 at startup,

Sounds like your hard drive died. If hard drive is dead you wont be able to get into anything but the bios. Hold down the CTRL key when computer starts and dont let go and try to force it into going into bios for you.

How to load new ssd for eee pc

By SSD I assume you are refering to a Solid State Drive to replace your existing hard drive. If this is the case you need to install the drive and then boot off the CD that came with your computer and reinstall the operating system. Note that all you old info will still be on the original hard drive but you can still access it by purchasing a 2.5 inch USB hard drive enclosure. When you plug it into a USB port it will be detected as a second hard drive.

My eee pc 900 series wont conect to internet

Your computer is asking for the WEP key which is the security key setup at installation so anyone who wants to enter your network must know the password. Check the simple things first, like your CAPs Lock key is off, Num Lock key is off, double check you are typing in the correct password. You can change the WEP key with the software that came with the wireless installation.
