Question about Tecumseh Garden

Am looking for a tecumseh ULT50 manual

Lawn mower fires once and then that's it. Sometimes backfires as if too far advance. Have checked everything, valves, clearance, carby, spark, flywheel key and all OK. Any ideas

Yes I have reseated the valves

Thanks, the compression is fine with no wear on the bore and no piston slop. Am going to pull the carburetter apart 'again' and triple check everything and maybe replace some gaskets. Just one more thing to mention is that when trying to start the mower, after it fires the once it then appears to want to run backwards and pulls the starter cord from my hand and winds it up tight. This one is really doing my head in!The timing appears to be non adjustable, but, could the ignition module somehow be faulty? Firing intermittently perhaps. Reluctant to spend $50 on something that may potentially sit on a bench as a spare. Thanks again to everyone.

Hello, since you checked all of that there ,what is the compression, should not be below 60 lbs any thing lower and will not run, check for a bad head gasket and proper compression should be between 60 to 130 lbs, hope this helps,

I couldn't find oversized rings. Compression low, flywheel key was deformed. so I replaced that. My end of line decision, toss it, go to a yard sale, and buy a better mower to work on. It's a garbage mower anyhow. Good luck

Weak valve spring, stuck valve? Compression test may come out fine(60 plus lbs), but then when running, it may bind and stick, or not close in time consistently. I currently have one where we believe there is too much crank case pressure building up. When you turn it over, bubbles come out of the oil fill orifice. Guessing it's a plugged vent. Probably not your issue, but putting it out there.... Good luck.

Have finally sorted the problem after speaking to an eighty five year old ex maintenance worker. Apparently, sometimes the crank gears, located by removing the baseplate, coupling and sump cover slip gears and hence the timing goes out. Still don't know how this can possibly happen but it had. Removed gears and put back to where it should had been, reassembled and worked first time. It took a while but I got the result in the end. Thanks to all that responed. This is a repair worth remembering. Cheers, Bob

Personally, could not get over-sized rings. Solution, go to a yard sale and get a better mower to work on. Stop throwing money away.

On my Murray lawn mower Briggs engine, after starting up, it backfires. What are the possible problems?

You timing needs checking and adjusting. The timing is too far advanced if it backfires through the carburettor, or retarded if it fires through the exhaust.

Late 90's Master Craft Tecumseh Prism 4 lawn mower engine... how do I identify the model number

I suggest take photos of it from all sides then show the photos to the mower parts counter guy.
Then buy the shop manual from him. They last forever.

I have a Tecumseh ohv125 motor& when trying to start it, it seems to backfire & motor goes in reverse direction for a second. This is causing the starter motor to work loose. What is causing this?...

The backfire sounds like you have carbon build up. Either take the head off the motor and clean it along with a clean or new spark plug to possibly fix your problem. "check the spark plug first" look for carbon build up! If you don't know how to remove the head and there is build up you can run some 2 cycle gas in it and that will loosen the deposits. Yes this will cause your motor to smoke quite a bit. Sea foam is also a good product to clean out the top of a motor at ease

Tecumseh 0hv130 hard starting

Check your flywheel key, it may have slightly started to shear. Which will throw the spark timing a little off.

Victa ultima 207cc eng mod ult50 tecumseh starts runs for 15 sec then stops

it's in the carburetor. If it runs while being forced fuel then it means that the carb isn't supplying enough if any fuel for it to run on it's own. Take the carb apart as far as you can and make sure all the little orifices are clean

Troy bilt riding lawn mower runs when its cold but backfires when it heats up

Sounds like you have a valve that is sticking open when it's hot. If your intake valve is not closing all the way when the engine fires, then it will "fire" back out thru the intake instead of the exhaust valve. You will probably need to have a professional look at it, as valves can be very tricky.

Check the gas cap vent. A partial vacuum in the tank will cause these symptoms.

5 hp tecumseh mower. plug is firing. carburator bowl is full of gas and float is working. won't start!

Check the flywheel key. It is the most common problem I have found when a Tecumseh either wont fire or backfires. When you have the flywheel uncovered, take a nut the same thread as the flywheel. Remove the one from your machine and use the other one for the next operation. Take the new nut, place it on the sshaft in place of the one that was there. Lift the flywheel with one hand (to get a strain on it) and with the other hand, rap the nut with either a wood mallot or a regular hammer. You may have to rap it sharply. The flywheel will come loose and you can see the problem. Go to a small engine repair shop and get a new flywheel key. Install it and go about your cutting. Good luck...Lee
