We own a GE PSS26SGRB side by side refrigerator. After a couple of years it began to make a howling noise. The noise is not continuous but rather intermittant. Howls for 10 seconds then quiet. Cooling is fine and no problems with the ice maker.

I have the same on and off howling noise from behind the unit as well. I have taken off the lower rear cover and cleaned the compressor in that area and it did not help. Looking for a solution as well.

I've had the howling for months, sometimes louder than other, now my light went off in the fridge and a new (working) bulb doesn't work either. I am 90% sure the howling is from the control board, but I can't find out if the control board also controls the lights. Does anyone know?

I don't see anything located directly behind the icemaker on this model. Try to better isolate the location of noise if you can. If the icemaker is at fault, I wouldn't bother trying to repair. Order another one. One other thing to check is the water flow. When the noise happens again, stick your finger in the ice mold and feel for water. If it just filled, then problem may be in the water valve. Hope this helps,

FINALLY fixed this problem. It's NOT the fan motor. Tried that. It's NOT the control board. It's NOT how full you load the freezer or fridge. Mine is full. The problem is this: When they ship the units from the factory, there are two pieces of rubber trim that seal the left and right side of the fan box at the back of the freezer. During shipping, the trim slides down, exposing a 1" to 1/2" gap where air can get sucked in. This turns the fan box into a musical instrument. FIX: I simply put some electrical tape over the open spaces, and the howling stopped. It's been a week with no sound at all. Previously it howled all day, every day. The proper fix is to loosen the fan box and slide the trim back up into place, but putting tape over the gap will do the same thing and is easier. Enjoy your quiet kitchen! P.S. to GE: Please put some sealant on these gaskets before you ship them from the factory, so that they do not slide out of place during shipping. I'm sure they were silent when they left the factory, but you need to account for shipping. And inform your telephone staff of this fix.

Howling

Howling suggests something wrong!!!! Just kidding , of course. It does suggest that something is rubbing. Most noises are caused by vibration, same thing as the noise when my old bones rub together because the cartilege has worn away over the years. I suggest you find a food grade lubricant, hunt around at Lowe's or Home Depot for same. and if you have one, use a finger pressure squirt gun to squirt some of this stuff into the mechanisms that are inside your ice making unit. There are some small mechanisms in an ice maker that develop some pretty good forces especially to break up the ice. Unfortunately I am sure there may be some mechanisms that you can not get to very easily and you may have to take something apart.. Yeah, I know, involves emptying the fridge and all that bother...

Very Loud Ice Maker in GE gfss6kkxs Fridge

Sorry to inform you but GE refrigerators are known for their noise making machines. I myself have a GE Profile side by side but will never own another GE product. After repairing appliances GE is better priced than their competition and the reason cheaper made product. Sometimes cheaper doesn't mean better. Outside looks really good but what you don't see is ugly. BB

Hi, our GE icemaker is making a noise. it

You can try turning off the ice maker switch , then back on , but the ice maker is electronic . If any internal damage is done , replacing the ice maker , will be the best solution .

My fridge is howling pretty loudly when ever it runs , the howling is coming from behind the ice maker turned the ic e maker off but unit st ill howls what s wrong

Hi, It sounds like the evaporator fan motor is going bad or there is frost building up and hitting the fan blade.
Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel inside the freezer and locate the fan.
You can plug the refrigerator in and see if the fan is making the noise.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
