Question about Dell 946 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Dell 946 Won't Print

946 is set for the default printer. My PC sent the printer the firmware update and it can tell when I disconnect the USB cable. But, when I try to print the job it is sent to the queue and then one second later it is deleted and nothing will print.

    This did not fix the problem. The printer does work when connected to other PCs. I have tried reinstalling the driver and disabling the McAfee firewall and it still does not work. The PC can see when I unplug and plug back in the USB cord, the printer is set as the default printer, and it is online. When I try to print something I see the print queue receive the job then shortly after it is gone and the job does not print. There has to be a setting some where that is stopping the printer from printing.

    My Dell 946 prints ok,however the fax will not receive and print.The viewer says recieving fax but does not carure and print data.

    Each new print job sent to the printer stalls in the print queue and requires restart of the computer before it will print. Once the computer restarts the print job prints.

Turn off the printer.
disconnect the printer from the computer.
restart the computer.
conencted the printer after the computer is up, and all applications are loaded.
the computer should inform you the printer is connected.
send a test page to the printer.
done

    The problems that users encounter while using a Dell printer

    varies with the model. However the common problems all Dell printer models suffer from are their slow speed and faulty paper feed mechanism. Quality of prints varies from one model to another, but most of the models do not produce prints having very fine qualities. A Dell printer is particularly notorious for its poor and faulty feed mechanism. They tend to cripple the papers or take in large number of papers at a time and print parts of documents on each page. They keep on generating messages indicating lack of paper, no matter the paper is being supplied or not. Such a problem makes the printer absolutely useless.

    being said, if your printer is still in warranty, please replace it. or get your money back. if not, there is not much anybody can help.

A 49 error is usually caused by either a corrupt print file or file that the printer does not understand. In most cases updating the firmware will resolve these problems. First, unplug all usb and network cables attached to the printer and power it on. If it comes to ready that is a good sign. Make sure that there are no stale print jobs in the queue of any computer that prints to the printer. Plug the network or usb cable back in and see if the printer continues to stay on without a 49 error. If yes, then go to www.hp.com and download the current firmware for your printer. Most firmware updates for these units are available as an easyupdate utility. Run that utility from any computer that normally prints to the printer. Select that printer from the drop down menu in the utility. After the firmware has been updated the printer will restart and you are ready to go, with your 49 error a past memory.

Hello.

Be certain that your USB cable is snug.

If still a problem and there are jobs in the print queue, go to Printers and Faxes and delete your printer icon.

Note: Here's how to delete a printer icon in Windows 7:

1. Open Printers by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.
2. Right-click the printer that you want to remove, and then click Delete.

If you can't delete the printer, right-click it again, click Run as administrator, and then click Delete. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.



Disconnect the USB cable.

Restart your computer.

Reconnect the USB to your computer.

Your computer should see your printer. Install the printer driver.

If still a problem, either your USB port on your PC, or the USB printer cable is probably faulty.

Printer shows in printer folders, when something is sent to print, it activates, pulls paper into printer and simply sets and doesn't do anything else. The queue shows a print request outstanding but...


This may be a port problem plug it into another port on the PC Sometimes easier to delete the printer in Device Manager after unplugging power and connection to PC Let it be discovered again and set itself up on a spare and available port.

Check that the cables between printer and PC are in fully to their sockets.

I downloaded drivers for the 946 offline and now it is dead. Not responding at all...just makes a beeping noise and a red light flashes. have you seen this problem before and what's the fix?


drivers can't cause such behaviour, only firmware update, but I do not think that this device even supports firmware updates. Even unattached to PC the device should work as a copier. Restart it and the PC, look for a trivial reason, say paper jam or low ink.

Dell 946 printer has been working for over 2 yrs with Dell computer. Today computer says can not communicate with printer. Will not print from any program. Ran thru trouble shooting, disconnecting USB...


reinstall the printer driver and check the printer spooler started or not........... to start print spooler go to start...>run..then type services,msc then enter..>it will open a window....>open printer spooler service and restart it.....................

MY PRINTER WONT PRINT


1. Disconnect everything (usb and power cables.)
2. Plug in the power cable, turn on the printer.
3. Get the manual and drivers for your printer and reset it to factory defaults.
4. Delete the printer from Windows Printer control panel. Reboot.
5. If the drivers files you downloaded are .exe files, execute it and follow installation instructions.
Else, plug back the usb cable. Windows should detect it. If asking for drivers, point to those you just downloaded. If it where in .zip format, you first need to uncompress it to some folder.

Dell 946 AIO printer won't stop beeping after firmware update attempt


Same thing happened to me....yesterday I went online at www.dell.com to download the latest firmware & driver for my Dell 946 Printer. After downloading the firmware the printer went haywire and is rendered useless. It emits beeps and the green power light will stay lit then flash every 3 seconds or so. There is no read-out on the lcd display.
I phoned Dell only to be told I should not have downloaded the firmware and that Dell does not recommend downloading firmware. If that is the case then why is the firmware listed on the Dell site with instructions to do so? I was advised that no support could be offered because the printer is out of warranty and was told to uninstall the printer and re-install. I have tried everything, including uninstalling printer, unplugging printer, etc. and nothing has helped. I have researched online and note that this is a recurrent problem. This problem is noted in the forums section of Dell.com - I have followed directions listed in the forum section of Dell.com as noted (see below websites) but this has not fixed the problem....

Since this seems to be a known problem and the problem is actually caused by downloading firmware from the Dell site I feel it is an injustice not to offer some type of support to rectify the problem. I have always bought Dell products and advised others to do so, but with this problem I feel that I will be changing my brand that I purchase.

I will be contacting Consumer Reports - I feel this warrants some type of recall!!

it's unusual to have same problem if completely uninstalled printer(removing printer, then uninstalling,after which use printer installation cd then re connect printer when prompted). If you have a spare usb port install software then connect printer to a different usb port. Lastly try; go to printers and faxes folder>right click on printer icon>properties>advanced, then click the radio button 'Print Directly to the Printer' and see if it prints. Also make sure this printer is set to default printer Try an updated driver, if any,from the Lexmark web site, as they are the same printer without the Dell logo. Your rating is appreciated.
