Question about GE Microwave Ovens

2 Answers

Our microwave is a GE Spacemaker, Model # JVM1630WB004, mfg. in Mar, 2001. Just today it suddenly decided not to function other than the light in the oven coming on when activated, etc. It does not cook anything right now. Is there some kind of a fuse or similiar place where we can access the power unit to fix this problem?

You may either have a short or another electrical problem. You might have to get it checked up in a shop to see if the heating element inside the microwave is faulty and if it is, you might need a new element or some electrical things inside to get fixed. If it is a short, it might have overheated the circuit board that controls the heating element to stop working, only allowing the light to come on when activated.

If your microwave oven doesn't seem to work at all, check these:

Fuses
Usually, when your microwave oven doesn't work it all, the internal fuse (thermal fuse) is blown. This fuse protects both you and the oven. When it blows, you need to have a qualified appliance repair technician replace it.

Door switch
If the fuse isn't the problem, check the door hooks and the door-release button. When these are broken, the door switch doesn't activate, so the oven can't work.

if the fuses are ok and the door switch works also.

It may be a circuitboard or other component problem. if you need to get inside the unit, you need to take the cover apart but I warn you if you don't have electronics repair experience.. at all it may be best you contact a repair man, as its alot more dangerious when working inside a appliance that works with the current that comes out of the wall socket which can kill, than working inside a computer or other low voltage device.

Most major manufacturers supply manuals online so if you were to log on to the manufacturer's web site, you may be pleasantly surprised as usually, if available, one is able to download, by model number, Customer Instruction Manuals, Dealer Network for spare part supplies as required.

The information is normally free of charge.

I hope this helps.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part
