You may have solved this problem already, but I had a similiar situation. If you can remove the round hard plastic fasteners that the straps pass through, it really is not too difficult to take the pad off. They are just clips that push against the hard plastic back of the seat to hold the straps in place. To remove them, I just took a flat head screw driver and placed it against the long side of the fastener and pushed up and toward the center of the fastener. I did this for both sides of the fastener and it popped right out. The straps then just unhook from the back and thread through to the front. Make sure to note how the straps are placed so that they can be replaced correctly. The pad washed up very nicely for me. I used warm water and regular detergent. I let it dry in the sun. Hope that this helps.
First, snap out the black pieces that attach the cover to the seat with a pair of pliers or a kitchen knife. Then turn the seat over and remove the base by sliding out the metal rod that runs thru the base and seat. Then unhook the center buckle from the bottom of the seat and back up thru the seat.
Unhook the straps from the metal bar on the back of the seat and thread them back thru the seat. Be sure to remember the order in which you slide it thru the components so you can reassemble. It may be helpful to lay them out in the order you removed them.
Unhook the elastic bands holding the bottom in place and slide it over the top part of the seat and off the seat.
If you need to remove the top part and wash, remove the black pieces the same way as the bottom, unhook all elastic and slip it off the top.
I wash mine in cold water with mild detergent and usually let it air dry so as to not shrink it.
Reassemble by reversing steps.
Those pieces WILL snap out, it just takes a bit of effort. Both my son and the boy that I nanny for have this car seat and I have taken them apart for washing the cover a couple of times. Just make sure to remember where everything goes back to. If you're having difficulty prying them up, try using two spoons. Wedge either the handle ends or the spoon ends under either side and use them to leverage the piece up. Hope this helps!
