You have to right click on "my computer", select "manager".. there you can find and select "disk management"
in disk management you can find every drive connected to your pc.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457110.f12zs01_big(l=en-us).jpg

there you will also see your external drive, and you can start to identify the problem (maybe problem with drive letter allocation, filesystem type..). start by rightclicking in the row of your disk to use the contextual menu.
i know it's just a starting point.. but you definitely a need little more troubleshooting.

SOURCE: USB External harddrive not accessible

A couple of possibilities:

1. Not enough power to the drive.
Does the external have its own power supply?
If not it may not get enough power from the USB bus to spin the drive up properly. Put your ear up to the drive and compare how it sounds when you have it in the desktop.
I have an external drive that has an extra connector for just that occasion. If yours does not have this , you will need to get a powered USB hub to rectify the situation.

2. Corruption on the drive. While it is plugged into the desktop , right click on the drive in explorer , go to properties , then tools and error checking. Run a scan and fix any errors.

SOURCE: My computer is not recognizing my LaCie external hardrive

First cehck whether your computer is able to recoznize other USB storage devices or not. If you see that it is not recoznizing other USB storage devices. Then you need go to your Boot Up screen, the screen that opens when you restart your PC.

Then go to the USB section and enable USB drive.

If this also does not resolve your problem, then try installing USB drivers on your PC, You can install them from the website : http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/usb2-driver.html

I hope this resolves your problem.

My computer cannot detect my external hard disk... when i insert my usb cable to connect to my pc my hd does blink..but when i open the explorer there is no sign of my hd is detect..

Hi..

Is it a new harddrive in a external case..if so i have the same prblems and i have to remove the harddrive and insert it into my computer and format it 1st...then place it back into my external case...
If you have used it before, then the best thing to do is try it on an other computer,if that doesn,t recognize then try a different usb cable,if still no go...then the harddrive might be either virused up...then you will have to put it in your computer to virus scan.or your harddrive may be faulty...
Or the last thing...if it is a new external google your motherboard because if it is a old computer your trying to use it on..it may not regonize the harddrive if the capacity is to large..

Hope this helps..if so please take the time to rate it,and if i can be anymore help.

Regards

Computer won't recognize (Vista)

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are

using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and

not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to

the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is

lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not

be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system,

and plug the harddrive, then Right-Click on my

computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk

Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should

see ALL the drives installed on your system,

including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is,

try and locate the one representing your harddrive,

and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter

and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter

(i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your

system, and click on OK.

This should make your harddrive to be detected

automatically.

Try this out and let me know how it goes.

Hope this helps you out.

Goodluck!

Hello to all! before attempting unscrewing the hp..how can i retrieve my data??

have you had operating system problems?? the easiest way to retrive data from a hard drive is to purchase a USB harddrive external caddy for it, then you can fit your hardrive into it and plug it in USB to another computer and brows all the files. caddys are very cheep i picked up a 2.5" for £3 from my local computer shop.

Malfunctioning WD passport that windows doesn't detect.

Inside the case is a regular laptop size harddrive.
Laptop harddrives are 2.5 inches across. (2-1/2 inches. Desktop harddrives are 3.5 inches)

I would suggest the external enclosure the harddrive is in, is defunct.
I would suggest buying a new external enclosure, and putting this harddrive in it. Then just plug the USB cable in, (As you did before), and download your data, to be ready to transfer.

You need an external enclosure that is Sata, and is for a 2.5 inch harddrive. These are relatively inexpensive.
Let me show you some examples:
