    It is the new Singer 118 Featherweight II, not the vintage one.

  • wildegirl Oct 27, 2008

    Does anyone know where I can get a service manual for this machine. The cost of professional repair is more than I paid for the machine.

  • wildegirl Oct 28, 2008

    All I can find is the instruction manual and it doesn't have any info on how to put back together. I need the service manual. Thx.

    Bit of a problem there, the machine comes apart in two pieces and probably the nut from the stop has fallen inside the machine, if you can take the bottom off the machine which I don't think you can you need to make sure the nut is in the bottom, if you can't take the bottom off shake the machine back and forth and see if you can hear the nut in the bottom, if you can then leave it, I would not if I were you strip the machine down to fix the bobbin stop, I would be inclined to glue the bobbin winder stop with a really strong glue.

Keep the machine up-side down and shake well even the nut comes out, put the nut on proper place and visit the singer web site for more assistance.

Hi,

Offhand considering the age of the machine and some specialized design, the probable options are:

  • seek the services of an authorized service center;
  • seek the services of a qualified professional;
  • if you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself), you would have to access a Service Manual to proceed.
Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I turned the stop motion knob in order to wind a bobbin and the knob fell off! I have tried to put in back together but now only the knob will move not the balance wheel. As as result the clutch will not...

There should be a washer that fits over the balance wheel, if you dont put that back on the machine wont work.
Check around and see if it fell off when you removed the knob, or check to see if it is stuck inside the knob.

The washer is about 1" in diameter with a couple little tabs on it.
It will only work when installed correctly so if at first you fail just turn the ****** over!

Singer Featherweight tension assembly

Putting this back together is a thirty second job if you have done it a hundred times. If you have never done it but have mechanical aptitude, it may be a challenge.

Whatever you do, don't bend the check spring out of shape!

Below is a link to the Singer site with the schematic for reassembly. When placing the check spring back in place, place it in about the 6 o'clock position with no tension so that it has a fair amount of check before pulling it up in place..

When setting the tension, at a setting of "1" the tension disks should just be slightly compressing the beehive spring. "0" is almost no tension at all. Normal sewing is 5.

Get all of the parts together and push in the cup with the numbers while screwing on the knurled nut taking care to get the pin in one of the holes.
