If your battery is about two to three years old, you may need to change the battery. Batteries could last this long but the manner of use determines its efficacy.

Gateway battery only charges to 70 %

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

Gateway laptop Model No. NEW95 won't charge

If the main battery is not charging properly and you state the charger and battery are fine, then there is only one possibility, the charge circuits on the motherboard are defective, this is a very rare situation and I have seen it once in all the years of service, make sure the battery is not the problem because in most cases it is.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a plugged in Gateway laptop even if it is fully charged.

If you use your laptop plugged in while fully charged it will shorten the life of your battery so that after a few months of doing this the battery will only hold the charge for a short time.
If you need to use it plugged in when the battery is fully charged it's best to remove the battery first.

How old is the battery? If this laptop is a couple of years old, you may need a replacement, depending on how many recharge cycles have been done.
