SOURCE: Compaq Desktop won't boot up.
firstly you need to hear if there is any kind of noise made by your Hard disk ( this is to check if it has been physically damage)
1.then to check if it has some bad sector, you need to remove to hard disk and use it as an external harddisk or a secondary hardisk in another computer, there you can go in Accessories in your start menu and try for disk check
2. you will need a bootable cd say 98se, then boot with cdrom support,then you can run chkdsk command on your command prompt that is commonly C:\
both the options will was you if your harddisk is having bad sector or not

Testimonial: "I will try these. I didn't think about using the HD drive as a secondary. Thanks"
If you haven't changed the motherboard from the time you bought it, then there must four onboard sata connectors on the motherboard, refer below picture;
If you haven't installed four sata drives, then there must be at least 3, you can connect the new hard drive on any port, no matter Master or Slave, Primary or Secondary, it'll automatically set it for you. You also no need to worry about the cable, both the ends are same, it works on any direction;
Same thing with the power cable, you can join it on any power cable..
I hope this helps, if you have problem with this or if in case your motherboard is different, please let me know;
Thanks for using FixYa.

if it is your power suply that is bad its very easy. all you have to do is get a replacment oem powersuply i would go with this one http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/300-watt-power-supply-fsp-atx-300-gu.php?psu=ATX-300GU-SR2010NX,. you then will want to make sure the computer is powered down. once you get it powered down i would strongly suggest wearing a anti static strap can buy at any computer repair store. you then want to look at end of connectors and will be labeled. u then want to label the ends as you unplug them. all you have to do is label the new ones. once you get old power supplies cables labeled. you can unhook the four mounting screws on the back that hold power suply to case. then all you have to do is hook up new power surly as you labeled old one and can just match up the plugs. then all you have to do is mount to computer. once you mount it go ahead and power up.
