A.O. Smith Water Heater Problems

Ever since the Gas company Nipsco changed the Gas Meter on the outside of my home, because of 2 gas leaks on the meter, and had to shut off the gas to my home and then come in my home to start everything back up, my gas water heater does not produce enough hot water. On top of that, the Nipsco guy even broke the thermostat button to the water heater. I did report this. The problem is now that the hot water stays hot for so long and then starts to get cold. What did they do to my water heater? It was working perfect until this happened.

    Did you mean the temperature settings, because I did turn that to hot, even though the knob was broken by Nipsco, but I am still running out of hot water.

    Thank you for getting back with me. I wanted to let you know the model# ( KGA 20 910 ) cap U.S gal 30 ser no MM83-34158-Z99 gas type NAT BTU/HR input 40000. AO Smith Permaglas Glass lined Water Heater. I hope this helps. I am so tired of my hot water running out and I have to wait for the water to get hot again. Hope you can help me here. I am still waitng for Nipsco to get back with me on this matter as well.

    I am so glad you found out what could be the problem. I sure will call them up and let them know to get out here and fix this problem that they created. I am going to get on that Monday morning, plus Nipsco is taking too long to get back with me on this problem anyway. I will surely let you know when they get this problem fixed. Thank you so much for helping me with this.

I have a AO smith water heater and the flame is very big and yellow can the control be bad ?

Ok here is how a heater works - there is a high setting cut out and a low settin cut out. The cycle is as follows. The water heater first heats to a preset temperature , say 120 degress. You draw water and the temp in the tank drops to say 90 degrees at which point it fires again- sensing that if it doesn't you will run out of water.I think that this setting has been set too low to say 75 degrees and you get cooler water because the heater cannot catch up. You must find this control in book at set the differential to twenty degress.This will stop you from running out of hot water.Just for the record less reputable companies will do this on purpose over a coulpe visits adn tell you the heater is failing and must be replaced. Get a book. In the mean time I need your model # so I can find this setting for you.Wait to hear from you. Allen

Someone has messed with the differential setting - so the water heats to correct temp but cools too low before coming on. get book -easy fix

    ok here is your problem - the regulator they put in has not been adjusted properly and your hot water heater is slow to heat up because it is on a low flame . Call them up- tell them to get their asses moving ,New crew not same as before, also tell them and you want the supervisor to inspect work and sign it off as being properly repaired. Make sure they repair all damage and document it. Take pictures right away of damaged switch.Email them every day - call them everyday. You are a client that deserves service.You pay for their service , do not pay a dime until it is resolved and tell them so. Send registered letter and advise that a copy has been sent to your lawyer as well. When they do service it and they will very quickly- have a couple witnesses there. If you have a camcorder- put it in hiden area of room and set to record just before they arrive -point it right at where they have to work. Next mark valve with marker in visible spot and take picture. If they say they changed it again and mark is still there-you are being cheated.Keep all reciepts and start file. Rember at this point you have to let them know you mean business. Let me know how it goes. Allen

Gas exhaust smell when Hot water heater ignites

Absolute danger here:

1) Call gas company IMMEDIATELY to check for gas leak that can cause explosion and fire.

2) Call plumber immediately to fix improper combustion or improper vent before toxic combustion by-product kills family.
Gas appliances must vent toxic by-product outside and away from home where the gasses will kill the planet instead of you.

1) You want the truth: Forget tankless.
There are many tankless water heaters with insoluble problems.
And endless problems.
Rheem knows it.

2) Do you really expect your home computer to work flawless after replacing motherboard?
Get your money back from Rheem, or get a full replacement.

3) OR fix water heater yourself today: Install tank-type gas water heater for $350 from local box store.
FYI: Do not buy Rheem, Richmond, Ruud, GE as these units from Rheem have problems that require service technicians.
Instead buy Whirlpool, American, State, Craftmaster, Reliance, Kenmore, as these units from AO Smith have fewer problems and can be repaired by homeowner using simple part replacement.

Where can i get a 21dv50 water heater to buy

21dv50 is discontinued. This is ordinary tank-type 50 gallon gas water heater.
Amazon sells 50 gallon 22V50F1 Rheem water heater for $420 with free shipping ... but who carries the warranty?

Frankly you can get in-store returns, and buy same quality gas water heater at local box store since Rheem makes GE water heaters at home Depot.
Other brands are equally good, as AO Smith makes Kenmore water heaters at Sears and Whirlpool at Lowes.

I prefer the AO Smith because maintenance is easier.

Water heater leaks

You have to replace water heater.
But you can buy-time if leak is small by turning heater off except when you need hot water. This will give you 30-60 days to shop and find best heater.

To prevent tank from rusting in this manner, inspect and replace anode rod each 2-4 years, and keep water pressure below 80psi.

Your water heater has intellivent gas control thermostat.
There are always problems with water heaters. It is a huge field.

1) Open following link for AO Smith service manuals.
I do not see service manual specifically for the GP series.

2) Open following link to identify gas valve and download typical service manual:
Some AO smith power vent models have intellivent gas valve, and some have smart valve gas vent. Older models might have knob-type gas valve.

The gas company has come out twice becuase the pilot went out. He found a leak and fixed it and i had a hot water shower once before it went out again. He came out a second time and did the repair again...

A number of things can affect the pilot.
Unknown if this is new heater or heater that stopped working.
Unknown what type of gas valve is on water heater.
Unknown what the gas company man observed, and why he said call manufacturer, and what he repaired. Was the gas control valve leaking?
Unknown what type of general maintenance and testing has been done.

Option 1) The gas company said call the manufacturer.
Information shows on label on side of tank.

Option 2) Open following links and start reading. And then try to fix yourself.

Option 3) Call gas company guy and ask him exactly what he observed, write that down, and then add a comment with very specific information for possible help.

Option 4) Call local plumber and tell him the specific information that gas company man said, and see what solution he can offer.

Loud vibrating sound coming from hot water heater. Had gas company change meter and regulator. At first was losing hot water while in the shower. Went through check list after it coded out at #12, all...

Can't address other issues, but WATER pressure should be 40 to 80(I'd say 70)lbs. tester at home D for $10-15. Goes on hose Bibb outside, or at washing machine cold valve.
