Ge washer hickups or starts clicking when trying to agitate sometimes

We have a ge washer it will be running then all of asudden it will go into lockup mode and just click back and forth. like it will buck back and forth, like it is hanging up. you can sometimes turn it off and back on and it will work for a while 2 or 3 minutes then go to bucking again and the motor does feel warm so i don't know it is fairly new unit few years old. also the agitator only moves one way freely when unit off the other way is tight. is this right. thanks scot 59flame@cox.net

Scot, it almost sounds like you have a motor issue here. Does the machine go through the spin cycle o.k.? If you are handy with a meter, remove the front panel, push in on the clips on each side of the top with a puddy knife and the panel should come off. On the motor harness there should be a white and white/red wire. If you have a steady, not fluctuating, 120V during this bucking, it's more than likley your motor. If the voltage is fluctuating, it would be a timer issue. You also want to make sure you have nothing caught under the agitator, this will pop right up with a good tug. Catriver, post back.

Slow agitator

Sometimes it is a very simple fix.
Agitator dogs.
4 little plastic thingies that wear out so the agitator has nothing to grip.
I'm not sure if they are specific to each model washer but it's about a $5.00 try.
You have to take the agitator out.
I watched YouTube.
Pretty easy and far less expensive than a pro!!
It took 10 mins. The hardest part was getting the agitator apart, which takes elbow grease!!
Good luck!

Under the agitator is a drive block made of plastic. It is built to receive the transmission shaft spline. With age the drive block wears smooth and the shaft can no longer cause agitation. Yank off the agitator and the drive block is right there. A new bolt comes with the drive block or sometimes called a drive bell.ee76b0d.jpgf93262b.jpg

Barings probably over heating and expanding due to either dampness, lack of lube, bent broken or misaligned coupling. Is a warranty issue either way unless it was dropped during transit or used exessively on uneven surface. If its out of warranty you might be better of with a new one, trade in if possible.

Ge washer won't agitate

If the washer won't agitate at all, but the motor and belts are turning,
then you may have drive coupling or transmission issues. In this case, it
is well worthwhile to have a technician check the machine to verify this.
Sometimes, the base of your agitator can strip out, especially from
overloading. In such a case, the splines are damaged inside the agitator,
and can be seen after the agitator is removed.

If you can hear the motor running, and the water is moving a little bit, but not like normal where the clothes are being worked around you might just have worn out agitator dogs. This is a really easy 15 minute do it yourself fix, and the parts are less than $10 and widely available. Agitator wont work

OK. First, pull the agitator straight up and out of the washer. Sometimes you have to use a belt or similar item slipped under the agitator and attached to a broom handle to pull on. Second, remove the bolt holding the up side down looking plastic can shaped agitator drive and pull it off. Again, sometimes this does not come off easily, but in this case you would have to break the plastic to remove it. Third, try to turn the metal splined shaft with your fingers. If it turns, that's bad, meaning you need a whole new transmission. (a rather difficult and expensive repair if the machine is out of warranty) but if it does not turn by hand (most likely) all you have to do is replace the agitator drive part (WH49X10042) which is cheap and easy to install.
