SOURCE: Gemmy Santa Bear mouth does not move

Hi,
I would like to first tell you what the problem is with either your Bing or Bear head. Inside the head is a motor that works the mouth. On this rotating motor is a pulley type system, which has a twine or you could call a heavy string piece. It is attached to the motor, and when the is activated it rotates the thread round the spindle on the motor and the mouth operates.. It is quite a difficult to take this head apart. I worked on my Bing for some time to find out this problem.. The string comes away with use and of course time, that is is why the mouth no longer moves. If you wish to try and repair, you first have to remove the head from the base. If you look there are 4 heavy duty staples just round the collar neck area. They will come out with a small head screwdriver or something pointed. Just work it slowly under till staple raises up, then just pull it out. Once they are all removed the head should be loose. This is only to give you access to seeing the internals firstly. Now comes the hardest part. The soft moving part of the mouth needs to be removed. You need to work it of slowly as there is a glue base on it, so care is needed here and can take time. If you managed this all is left is the metal pin it was on. Now inside is the plastic unit that moves the mouth this is glued in which is the main problem. And this is the issue, it is pushed on and the only way is to remove is to have a precision head screwdriver and work it off... Best done by someone who is quite good with their hands and very patienced. Because it may break. Took me severals hours to remove. When you get it off the internal workings will come out of the head. There is no other way of doing this. Having the head loose allows you to look at the piece and the workings. A small torchlight held by someone is best as you work out the mouth fitting.....As i said it is no easy job and took me long periods of time to get to this point. I wish you all the luck in achieving this.......

The repair listed is just the start. You can, with a lot of careful work, remove the bottom of the mouth, but your work has just started. You will then have to remove the rod that holds the mouth rod to the mouth slide lever "spine". It has a small spring at the top and I found it easier to disconnect the spring prior to repairing the unit. It is glued in quite well so I suggest a Dremel tool to cut the sides off which you will enable you to remove the rod. Then you can remove the head from the spine without difficulty. Now you will see that the problem is as stated, the string that pulls the mouth open has separated from the motor shaft. The cause of this problem is that the grease that the mouth slide lever rides on has migrated to the string, and then, softened the glue, which allows the string to separate from the motor shaft. Now, clean the shaft and replace the string. The original string is nylon. You should use similar material, NOT cotton string or a rubber band. You can't use the old string as it is soaked with lubricant. Use a good super glue to bond the new string to the motor shaft. Next, test the unit to make sure that the mouth slide lever operates properly. Reassembly of the unit would be: remount the head to the neck, then reattach the mouth rod to the mouth and then reattach the mouth and rod to the mouth slide lever.

Gemmy Dean Martin Mouth doesn't move. I took the head off by removing the 4 staples and can see the internal parts. There are 3 phillips head screws at the base of the head and 2 holding the plastic post...

Remove the staples to loosen the mechanism from the neck.
Remove the two screws holding the post to the mechanism base with a small Phillips screwdriver. Push the mechanism mouth out as much as you can to reveal the mouth post base. Using a hairdryer, heat up the mouth post glue and pull gently to remove the mouth bottom. Pull the mechanism out. Take off the spring. Replace the string with similar string. I would also recommend buying a new motor on ebay for $3 from China. You can get him singing again.
