Question about Sony RDR-VX515 DVD Recorder/VCR

Open Question

Can't read un-finalized dvd disks.......

i was finalizing a dvd in my sony dvd recorder.
the power went off in the middle of the finalization process.
now the dvd disk can be read on my handheld vd recorder, but not by my dvd player hooked to the tv.

this brand of media has worked fine in this sony dvd recorder before so i doubt it is the recorder or the media.
also, the movie is there on the removable dvd disk , because it plays fine when in the handheld recorder.

what about the pc of software from that appears to be able to resolve this type of issue, a 'non-finalized properly' dvd disk?

thanks for any ideas/suggestions/resolutions !

SOURCE: Toshiba d-r4su won't finalize

Also if you use 16X media you need to contact Toshiba to get a firmware disc.  This has been known to happen to me a lot before I had a firmware upgrade.  The unit can record to 16X but not finalize.  I have always used Memorex media.

SOURCE: DVD -R finalizing

using a dvd+r with 1-16x speed is not advisable for this recorder. It may work but in the long run may cause some trouble. check the manual for compatible disc. it will give you hints on what disc to buy and use. Unfortunately this unit is only compatible with dvd+r dvd-r that are 8x speed or slower. hope this helps.

Finalized a Sony DVD-RW in a Handycam and now it asks "Make the disc recordable? DVD menu will be deleted. Yes/No. Not sure what I want.

The answer you want here is no. If you choose yes the Handycam will erase the data on the DVD-RW and get it ready for you to record on again. Now the disk is finalized thats the end of the burning process and the disk is done.

I have a jvc dr-mv150bj. I am knew to recording on DVD. I used the dvd to record the super bowl. I forgot to finalize and I was using a portable LCD projector. I unpluged the dvd recorder and took it...

finalizing completes the process of recording so that the disk can be read to play. Yes, probably if power goes off, you'll loose the recording as the disk can finish.
Basically, the code written at the end of recording creates a sort of index so the player knows how to read it.

Hello sir i have a problam . last night i shooted a video or some photos in a function.and when i come to home.the battery level is 10 min.then i want to finalize meantime the battry is stopped and...

I presume you were recording JPG's or video's to a DVD-R disk using the Sony camcorder, is this correct?

It finalizes the video to make it playable on a computer as a completed file. When you finalized it with a nearly dead battery it was in the middle of the process when the battery ran out. That is very dangerous to do with a nearly dead battery. It will corrupt the file or the entire disk if it runs out while it's writing to the disk. That's why some models won't let you start that unless you have it connected to AC power too.

It sounds like it was working on the file, got partway and ran out and corrupted the data.

So now it's stuck halfway done and that's not a mode it's expecting to see. It doesn't know what to do with the file or the disk.
The data is probably 99% intact but the formatting of the file or the file header isn't right anymore. You could try some other video player programs, and may find one that can read it - if you can read the disk at all.

You may have also been finalizing the DVD itself, if that is what you were recording onto ( you didn't say).

If that got interrupted while it was burning the final table of contents, etc then you probably won't be able to do anything with it. Someone who is very good with the intricate details of DVD copying and the file structures that are used may be able to rescue it though.

They'd have to read the disk in raw format or make it into an ISO image which allows them to make a copy of it. Then they can work on the copy without hurting the original any farther.

So again,, the data is probably there,,, since it was recorded on there, but the final file structure that is created during finalizing got missed or messed up, so it doesn't "know" that there is data there. So hang onto the disk, it's on there, you just need an expert that can convert the files into the proper format and finalize or retrieve the data off it.

Can not finalize disk

I have had loads of people ask me this question in just 2 weeks, so it often does happen okay?
Anyway you should not have to do a finalize on the disk, because when you stop filming, the camera reads it's end bit to the DVD auto, then after a few seconds you should be able to open the camera door.

Unit cant recoginze/ read a disk

I had a dvd-r disc recorded from a Philips dvd recorder that had not yet been finalized when the Philips went bezerk and died. I replaced it with the Sony GX300 and just for an experiment, tried to finalize it in the Sony

It worked. Not to say that it has to work with only THIS combination of the 2 same dvd recorders or twisting the scenario around with the Sony doing the recording and the Philips doing the finalizing. I also have a Sony dvd/vcr recorder to compliment the GX300. I will have to record a disc on the GX300 and try to finalize it with the combo unit to see if it will do well as a back up.

Right now a disc that is not full yet (home movie from my kids birth) is reading "Disc Error" on the GX300. I may have to do it over or see if the combo unit will do the same finalizing as the GX300. It doesn't have the amount of features that the GX300 has but thats what you get with a combo unit vs. a stand alone recorder/player.

If you know someone with another recorder, try to finalize on it. If not , you could find someone on this sight that has a GX300 and mail the discs plus a smalll fee and have them mailed back. Or you could find a used one cheap at some store and return it if it doesn't finalize.

Good luck

Finalizing DVD

If you unplugged the recorder while this process was ongoing, it probably failed. You will need to record again.

Have a great day! :)
