Question about Vacuums

No power to head of Kenmore Progressive canister vac

I have a Kenmore Progressive canister vac (model # 116.22812201). When I turn it on, it seems like it's sucking up from the head, but no lights come on and the brush doesn't roll. In other words, if I had hard wood floors, it would be great, but it doesn't do anything for the carpet. It seems like there's no power getting to the head although there is suction. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! I also have a canister with a non functioning carpet beater head. I have checked that there is electricity to the motor. I have disassembled the motor, the winding look like it is in good shape. I do not know if there is a problem with the reset button, however afer disassembling the switch it appears to be functional. Only other thing I have not tried is to bypass the reset switch. Could be a dead motor, however I am at a loss. Any thoughts?

SOURCE: kenmore progressive canister Sweeper

I figured it out ..by pushing the lever down and pry a screw driver into three different spots on the top, to release the rewind bar. Looks like three little j hooks hold it down. It took a flashlight and night time for me to see it.

The extension wands are defective and have trouble with their plug connectors on each end. The power head has a reset button on top right but no lights mean no power which means the wand isn't connecting the power to anything.

Sears has a new replacement -- too bad it isn't recalled so you could get it for free ($106.59 + tax + shipping). 2nd sweeper -- same problem.

1st sweeper: I just took needlenose pliers and pulled connectors out a little further (Too bad I can't seem to make the 2nd sweeper work with this easily. It might be one of the connectors or the wiring harness inbetween with a break.) Can't buy the wiring harness for this or connectors, just the wand.

If anyone has a working wand you want to sell me email me at hiwhatsnew@hotmail.com. Thanks!

SOURCE: Kenmore Progressive Canister Vacuum -Model 116 22812200.

hello... you might want to try checking the elbow or neck of the power nozzle for blockage. Remove the wand from the head and look through it. Also look through the wands . If there is no blockage, maybe there is a problem with you nozzle. Reattach all the parts and turn on the machine, turn on the power nozzle. Can you hear the other motor start? If so, check to see if the belt is turning. If it is not, and you definitely hear the secondary motor, then you need a belt. If it doesn't make any sound then, with the machine still running, press the button on the upper part of the power nozzle, this should reset your motor. I hope these tips helped ya, let me know, by giving feedback when asked. thank you, Rene (The Vacuum Doctor)

Try to find the reset button. It should be somwhere near the bottom area. It looks like a red dot that you can push inward. If you can press and hold the reset button, it will restart your suction and solve your problem.

My husband accidentally dislodged the belt on my kenmore canister vac. how can we disassemble the head to put the belt back on?

There should be 4-5 screws on the bottom of the brush assembly, remove them and you will see the brush and belt, remove each end of the brush assembly they should lift up and out of the housing, and either replace or reailine the belt on the motor side of the housing.

How do I disassemble a Canister Vac Model 116.21714. extension wand ?

Sadly, there does not seem to be much help available for this. Sears wants $100++ another $30-40 shipping to have UPS take it and may be fix it. If you do not want to pay the fees, you will still have to pay $50 to get it back. Sears service shops will not fix vacuums. What the heck?!

My kenmore progressive canister vacuum turns on only if the hose is attached to the floorwand. It seems that the canister motor is not working because I can't hear anything coming from the caniste

If the floor wand is powered, there may be an electrical connection that is broken when the wand is disconnected. This is part of the design, not necessarily a fault

After using the kemore vac it shuts off depending on how I m pulling on the tube part, it seems like there's a short where. Any help Thans,Steve the canister connects to the suction tube

This is a very common problem on your series of Kenmore canister vacuums. It is the result of a part inside the handle of the hose (where you would have your hand) which has broken and no longer properly supports and keeps in place the electrical receptacle that feeds electricity from the canister to the power head. If you provide a model number, I can provide an exploded parts diagram which will show you the likely culprit.

You can go to the Sears Parts Direct website and type in your Model number. It will return both an exploded view and parts list, with pricing for replacement parts. You can also order from them, and they can tell you stock status as well.
