SOURCE: Garbage Disposable won't work.

If the cutter plate will turn freely, look for a reset botton. Some units have them and depending on how it was installed, it will be around the back. It should be a push button, about 3/8" diameter. It takes a good hard push to reset it.

SOURCE: Removing dishwasher drain plug on a new garbage disposal.

The plug is thin plastic. Use a flat blade screw driver and a hammer to knock it out. I know this sounds primitive but this is how it is done. I have been a plumber for thirty years.

SOURCE: my garbage disposal woll not drain

shut off the power supply to start, open the cabnit and look under the unit there should be a resess in the center where you can fit an allen wrench into and turn to check for debris in the unit. Work it back and forth to loosen any possible abstruction. Turn the power back on and try the switch if this doesnt work you need to remove the trap from the drain underneath the sink. Its a U shape piece of pipe that catches debris in it and prevents sewer gas from entering the home.

Smelly garbage disposal

Patricia,
I would suggest putting some lemon juice in the disposal and let it sit for a short period of time and then run hot water down that drain while the disposal is running. Hope this helps!

Garbage Disposal Leak from bottom of motor

If you have a garbage disposal and you find that it is leaking then you need to first of all figure out where exactly the water is coming from. The reason is that depending on where it is leaking from will determine whether it is easily fixable or if it would be better to just replace the entire garbage disposal.

With this is mind the best way to find the leak is to put the plug in place and fill the sink with water. Then place a food coloring or non-toxic dye into the water. Red often is a very easy color to spot under your sink. Then let the water down the sink with the disposal running. If the water runs down the side of the garbage disposal then you have a leak at the seal where the garbage disposal hooks up to the sink. This can easily be fixed by removing the garbage disposal, cleaning the old plumbers putty off of the ring and sink bottom, and then reinstalling the garbage disposal.

If you do not see any water coming down the sides, but it comes out the drain pipe, then the drain may be clogged and/or the seals for the drain piping are bad. The seals can easily be tightened. They may have come loose from the vibration of the motor or just the expansion and contraction that occurs from hot and cold water going down the drain lines. If the drain lines are clogged a garbage disposal safe drain cleaner can be used or the drain can be taken apart, cleaned and snaked.

If you have the dreaded water coming out of the bottom of the garbage disposal then you have the worst problem. The internal seals that are to prevent the water coming into the motor where the shaft goes through to the actual grinding chamber have deteriorated to the point where they no longer keep the water from coming into the motor. The water will make its way down through the motor and run out the weep hole or the reset button.
These seals are replaceable, but a new motor is needed for a complete fix on many garbage disposals. Because of this, many times the parts to repair this leak will be at least 75% the cost of a new garbage disposal. This makes repairing your garbage disposal, not a very good option. Replacing the whole unit is often the best way to go to make sure you have a fix that will last for a longer period of time.

That should cover all of the potential ways that your garbage disposal can leak. Hopefully you are able to pinpoint the leak and make the correct call to fix your leaking garbage disposal.

Garbage Disposal Smells

What can you do if your garbage disposal starts to stink up the kitchen? Because of the stuff that you put down the disposal and grind up the residue can sometimes start to create a foul odor that can be noticed in and around your kitchen. To combat this problem there are some general things that you can do and also some things that you and grind up in the disposal that will help to keep it smelling great.

One of the things that will make the disposal smell bad is if your dishwasher discharges through the garbage disposal. The food left after the water goes through will soon start to spoil and stink. Make sure that you run your disposal after the dishwasher runs to clean out the food and keep the disposal clean.

Some soft foods like meats and cooked vegetables will also tend to stick to the plate of the garbage disposal. These will cause a smell to develop after a time as they breakdown. To stop this from happening keep harder foods or foods that smell better for last to run down the disposal. This will help to clean the plate and keep the garbage disposal smelling better.

If you are going to be away for a long time, or you are having friends over and want your garbage disposal to smell good, you can use a lemon or lemons rinds. Cut up the lemon and grinds it up before you shut down the disposal. This will have your garbage disposal smelling great!!

There are also commercially produced garbage disposal cleaners, deodorizers, and degreasers, that you and buy at most grocery or hardware stores that are made specifically for this purpose.

Garbage diposal leaking water

These can leak from a number of places. Check and see if the water is running down the side. If it is, check for CRACKS in the housing above the motor. Badger disposals are bad for this. Check the seal at the bottom of the sink, top of the disposal and if the water is coming out the bottom then the leak is a shaft seal inside. If the housing is cracked or the shaft seal is bad, you have to get a new one.

Motor just hums, grinder wedges are free, no leaks apparent, motor turns free in both directions.

yes there is start capacitor on each motor, connected to start winding.
There are two windings on each motor: start winding and run winding.
Both windings receive power at same time. If the start winding is bad, or capacitor is bad, then motor hums as the run winding receives power but there is not enough torque to get the motor rotating.
If motor is humming instead of rotating, then quickly the motor overheats and looses speed after repair or melts and fails.
The problem with disposal repair is getting the thing apart... finding replacement capacitor, or replacement parts, and then reassembling without a leak.

Replace garbage disposal shredder disc

Which direction does disposal blade turn?
For example when looking straight-on at the nut holding power saw blade, the blade rotates counterclockwise, so the nut is reverse thread.
Most disposals are not made for repairs

How do you remove it so you can replace the sink

To remove the diposal, do this:

Turn off the power to the disposal first

Under the sink disconnect the wiring to the disposal - this requires removing a cover and usually a couple of wire nuts. Then loosen and pull the connector out, replacing the wiring nuts after you do that. Some disposals are pluigged in under the sink. If your is, just unplug it.

Under the sink, disconnect the drain pipes to the trap

To remove the disposal, there is a keeper ring with three loops protruding from the sides directly under the sink. Note the position of the disposal under the sink so when you put it back, the drain pipes will fit again. Insert a short phillips screwdriver or pin punch into one of the loops. Support the disposal under it, then rotate the ring counterclockwise. The disposal should come loose. Be careful - they can be a little heavy.

I've got a wash cloth stuck in the sink disposal

Yes, you will need to get a disposal wrench, one would have come with diposal new. If you cant find one, one can be bought at hardware store. On bottom of disposal in center you should see a hole, the wrench will fit there. Turn counter clockwise. This should free up wash cloth.

The drain in to the garbage diposal is clogged.  Remove the drain hose from the dishwasher and clean the hose.  Also check the inlet to the garbage disposer and clena it.
