You might be better using a computer with xp to save your photos to another device or even burn them to a disk
windows 7 i have found if i use a data traveller on xp then try to use it on windows 7 it will always say it needs to be formatted do you want to format now

so i have designated certain data drives to my xp and others to my windows 7 although i have found that i can use small ones on each computer 1gb to 2GB

if you right click in the bottom toolbar when this is happening select task manager under applications you will see whats running if you dont want it to be running select end now also under processes see whats ticking over the same will apply

if you can get it to be recognised it might ask to be formatted

hope this helps

SOURCE: MFC application in kingston data traveller encountered problem and needs to be closed

how did you try to format ?, try to unistall the driver when complete put the drive back in usb port. if that doesnt work keep the drive in port and open my computer right click on your thumb drive and go to properties click on tools and try error checking. this is probably where you try to format. once test is done pull drive out and reboot then put drive back in

How to remove write protection from kingston usb drive

From the Kingston website:
DT101G2 - DataTraveler 101 G2 FAQ

Is there any security or write protection feature available for this DataTraveler? Unfortunately this unit does not have any security or write protection feature. If you receive a write protection message with this drive, check for the following:

  1. Verify that you are allowed to write to removable storage devices. There may be a security setting in the OS that disables write access to removable storage devices.
  2. Make sure you have not enabled write protection on the drive by using a third party software.
  3. If none of the above apply, the drive may be defective. Contact Kingston Technical Support for further assistance.

Where can I get instruction on how to use your 4GB DataTraveler - G3 - USB 2.0 ?

Hello Gwolk,

The Kingston 4GB DataTraveler Generation 3 (G3) USB 2.0 is a durable 4GB flash memory drive for use with both Macintosh and PC computers. It may be used to transfer files from one platform to another, or to carry files and small applications on a continuing basis. Having no moving parts, flash drives are exceptionally durable and reliable for years of use.Simple - just plug into any USB port

I think you will find that the card works fine but your computer doesnt recognise the card reader properly. Windows 98 does not properly recognise most usb devices but Windows 98SE does although I am not sure if it will recognise usb2 properly.

W98SE Driver for Kingston 1.0Gb DataTraveller Flash Drive

The people at your local computer shop are wrong but, Windows 98 should at least recognize the USB thumb-drive and ask for drivers.
I would remove all the USB Controllers from within Device Manager and restart; allow Windows upon restart to reload the USB Controllers; then plug in the drive and see if Windows at least recognizes and then install drivers.
It seems only the DTI/XX, KUSBDTE/XX, and DTII/XX support Windows 98.
