The manual is available on the "Sony" website. The job itself is not difficult, if you have any kind of normal manual dexterity. The connector is very small and can be quite fiddly. But, I do them quite regularly. So go for it and good luck.

Unfortunately, the service manual is NOT on the Sony website. I have been there and obtained everything they have on this laptop. There is a quick start guide and a user manual, but no service manual. I have found just about every other service manual out there except for this one. This would not be my first dis assembly of a laptop. They are all different in the way you access things like the keyboard and if you don't know how to get to it, you could break things. Not a hard job at all, just need to know what screws to take out what clips to release etc..

From what I can remember of The Vaio series, The way to get at the keyboard is via the clip-in speaker panel above the keyboard. The clips are very stiff (but it should be easier on the newer ones) . There are ,I believe, 2 screws that hold the keyboard down. I hope this helps.

You say the manual is on the website, but I can find no such manual for my particular model (see above). I have taken a number of laptops apart and repaired them in the past however the methods of access differ from laptop to laptop and I have always used a service manual to find out where those points of access were. I find videos and manuals on every other model of vaio out there but this one. If you can find the one for my particular model then by all means could you post a link to it for me? Cause I have looked and looked and I dont find it.

Check the keyboard connector. they come loose very easily with the amount of jolting a laptop takes.

I would but I don't have a service manual or knowledge of how to get to the keyboard.
I should of mentioned that I took a usb keyboard and tried it and it worked fine. I also booted to safe mode and the keyboard still did not work. I also reinstalled the driver and that didnt work. If anyone knows how to get to this keyboard or has a service manual then that would allow me to either changeout the keyboard or check the connection.

    thanks,

    Jim

Keyboard Not Working

Keyboard could need replacing. Try connecting a USB external keyboard and see if it works. If it works okay, you need to have the laptop keyboard connections checked. Replace the keyboard if connections appear to be okay.

Keyboard problem & it doesn't work prefect

If the keyboard has a round purple connector, power down the computer then unplug and then plug in the keyboard. Power on the computer. If it works your done if it doesn't replace the keyboard. If this is a USB keyboard, with the computer on, unplug and plug in the keyboard if it works great, if it still isn't working replace the keyboard. NOTE if this is a multi functional keyboard (special keys at the top) make sure you install the driver and any software associated with the keyboard.

My keyboard will not work

Hi,

Keyboard Is Dirty:

Keyboards should be cleaned with "spray-n-wipe" cleaner and a cloth or tissue on a monthly basis. Ensure that computer is not powered up while cleaning the keyboard. Compressed air can also be used to clean between the keyboard keys. Another tip: clean the keys with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

"Keyboard Not Found" Message:

Your keyboard is not plugged into the computer securely. Unplug it and plug it back in and the problem should go away. If this doesn't work, follow procedure: "Computer isn't taking inputs from keyboard" (below).

Key Is Stuck:

1. If a key does not work or is stuck in the down position, you may try to remove it with a CPU "chip puller" tool. These simple "L" shaped tools are great at pulling out keys. Once you've pulled out the stuck key, you can try to stretch the spring to "reanimate" its action.

Computer Isn't Taking Inputs From Keyboard

1. Is keyboard connected to computer? Ensure that the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard jack and not into the mouse jack. If the keyboard was unplugged, plug it back in and reboot the computer.

2. If the keyboard still doesn't work on boot-up, power down the computer and try to borrow a friend's known-good keyboard for troubleshooting. Plug the new keyboard up and boot up the computer. If the new keyboard works, the old keyboard is bad and needs to be replaced.

3. If the known-good keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure it sees the keyboard. It should say, "installed." If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard, then you probably have a bad keyboard port.

I Plugged Keyboard Into Mouse Port

1. Many mice and keyboards today use a PS/2 connector
. If you plugged your keyboard into the mouse port (or viceversa), follow steps 2 and 3.

2. Shut down the computer and plug the keyboard into the keyboard port. The keyboard port is usually marked with a "keyboard" symbol. Plug the mouse into the mouse port (usually marked with a mouse symbol).

3. Reboot the computer; the keyboard should work now. If keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure the BIOS recognizes the keyboard. You should see the words, "installed" or "enabled" under the keyboard.

4. If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard but it still doesn't work, you may have a bad keyboard port.

I Spilled a drink on my keyboard!

1. If you spill any liquid in the keyboard, turn it upside down ASAP. Drain all the water out of the keyboard, shaking it if necessary. If you've spilled water into the keyboard, just let it dry. You may use a hair dryer to dry out area under the keys (remember, too much heat and you could damage the electrical components).

2. If you've spilled a soda into the keyboard, completely rinse it in warm water. No soap please! You may use a hair dryer at this point or just let it dry for 2 days. Ensure the keyboard is perfectly DRY before you attempt to use it again. Don't plug a wet keyboard into electrical equipment. Think safety.

5. If the keyboard still doesn't work, replace the keyboard.

Keyboard Failure Press F1 or F2 but keyboard not working

If you get 'Keyboard Failure' message it can have two reasons.
1) The keyboard is not working properly. You will have to replace it.
2) If your keyboard has a PS/2 jack, the PS/2 keyboard port of your computer is not working. Buy an USB keyboard.
You can take your computer to the store and check which type of new keyboard (PS/2 or USB) works with your computer, before paying for it.

Did you install the CD software program for the Keyboard?
The Keyboard should have been plugged in before you started your computer. Then you should have installed the CD program.
