Question about Air Conditioners

1 Answer

High Pressure cutoff

My Ruud (upka-024jaz) heat pump will come on then the outside fan stops, but the inside fan runs giving me cool air. I press the high pressure reset and the outside fan starts and gives heat then it shuts off again giving cool air (not AC).

A repairman put a gauge on it and said that it stops at a bit more than 400 and the compressor heats up as well. Its ok in the AC mode.

I am not sure I need a compressor and a pressure switch as he suggested.

Its not an AC problem, it shuts off in the heating setting. Also it does work often, and stops sometimes.

Thank you so much. I will check all of these things.

YOUR OUTDOOR FAN MOTOR SHOULD NEVER SHUT OFF IN THE AC MODE. IT IS SUPPOSED TO SHUT OFF IN THE HEAT MODE WHEN ITS IN DEFROST. IF THE UNIT IS RUNNING IN COOL AND THE OUTSIDE MOTOR QUITS ,THE COMPRESSOR WILL QUIT SOON AFTER. EITHER THE RUN CAPACITOR FOR THE FAN IS BAD OR THE FAN MOTOR ITSELF IS BAD, IF CAP IS GOOD THEN THE MOTOR IS At FAULT. THE OUTDOOR PRESSURE SWITCH CAN ALSO OPEN IF THE INDOOR FAN MOTOR FAILS IN HEAT OR THE FILTER IS PLUM NASTY in heat OR THE INDOOR COIL IS PLUGGED UP in heat.. THE PRESSURE SWITCH USUALLY TRIPS AT 400 TO 425 SO ITS WORKING CORRECTLY. YOU MAY BE CONFUSING THE ISSUE SAYING THAT THE AIR IS HOT AND COLD INSIDE. IT IS COLD WHEN AC IS RUNNING HOT WHEN HEAT PUMP IS RUNNING IN HEAT BUT ESSENTIALLY not cold or hot if compressor isn't running, but a lot of folks describe the lack of cold air as hot when the compressor isnt running. but it basically is warm or house air temp.you test the capacitor with a capacitor tester or take it to motor shop and let them test it. odds are its a 5 , 7.5 or a 10. it should test within 10 % of rated value . ask for a RESCUE brand replacement motor. they are great ,reversable etc.carefully oil and sand the motor shaft and note exactly where the blade was located in relation to the grill so you get it back just the same. usually they wire up black to a leg of 220 power. white to the other leg of 220 power. brown and brown with white stripe to the capacitor.you can also pull whole fan shroud assembly on some units and take whole thing to motor shop and let them test motor cap, replace and all you do is return to unit and connect two power leads,

either your filter is plugged , the indoor coil is plugged , your blower wheel is plugged or your overcharged. the indoor coil is you heat disipation source in heat so the outside pressure switch trips due to high indoor pressure. start with clean filter and adequete air flow, next look at intake side of the evaporator coil ,is it covered with crud? if so air flow is restricted and an over temp condition occurs tripping outside safty switch. lots of times the blower wheel is neglected . if its plugged and covered with crud it cant move enough air and switch trips. obviously if the indoor fan quits the switch will trip so you may want to check the motor and cap/ good luck

I have a RUUD Heat Pump Model UPPB-024JAZ the outdoor pump stopped working last week. The reset button fixed the issue but whhy does it keep going off.

To start with, the tech charged you for an hours worth of service and only pushed the button. GET YOUR HOURS WORTH!
•The outdoor coil needs to be cleaned. Turn off power at the breaker and t-stat, clean the coil with water hose
•The outdoor fan motor may be slowing down or stopping due to motor bearings dry or weak run capacitor. Any noise/squealing from motor?
•Too much freon in the system.
•A restriction in the freon system.
•A improperly installed/mismatched system
•A (kynk) in the liquid line(3/8 copper)
•A stopped up or clogged filter dryer
•A dirty indoor coil that has an expansion valve(txv) will run too cold and the valve can close near "seated"
All of these, and more, can cause a HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH to open. When yours open, you have the red button to push which resets it(the switch). I have also found that the plenum(duct box that connects to your indoor unit at the discharge air) is supposed to be tapered to the air opening size of the blower outlet but that's hard to explain. If the plenum size is the same size of your indoor unit, width and depth in the upright position, the your plenum is not "tappered"(goes from one larger size to smaller size where connected to the I.d. unit). In that scenario, the high pressure switch opens during heat operation, not cool. I know, confusing. Try cleaning your o.d. coil first. And try to get an hour of work(or close) for an hour paid. And WORK SAFE!

My outside fan will not run and the inside unit runs constantly. can't push the reset button on unit outside

Your out door unit fan motor not runs due to pressure not build up at Heat mode. If its cool mode only fan runs with compressor when thermostat calls for it.

Without having technical knowledge, don't press any reset button. Hope it's helpful?

Ruud 12 seer heat pump not heating

It sounds like the unit is tripping off from high pressure. Check you filter and indoor coil. You may have low air flow inside that is causing the refrigerant pressure to be to high.

Ruud heat pump outside fan

You may be right in looking at the motor. It uses a different speed on heat than cool. The heat cycle uses low speed, usually red. Some manufactures use blue (medium). Cool uses black, high speed. If you are confident, switch the low speed wire with the high speed and see if this changes anything. If the fan motor isn't the problem, check the other setting (cool) if the overload trips, you may need to look into a new capacitor or compressor, if so, you can install a hard start kit. these are start boosters, and are inexpensice, sometimes they will give another year out of the comp. but I've put them on and they have lasted 5 years.
