SOURCE: can't tighten clutch on Kenmore zig zag sewing machine.

The clutch has fallen off the shaft. Remove the very small screw in the clutch release screw to remove the clutch release. Place the clutch(round thing with ears on it) back on the shaft with the center ears pointing towards the outside. Put the clutch release screw back on. Tighten it to make sure it works
properly. Put the small screw back in the clutch release screw and test it again. If it will not tighten or release properly, remove the clutch ,rotate it180 degrees and try it again. This should solve your problem.

SOURCE: kenmore sewing machine needle doesn't move.. won't go up and down.. the motor is running

Sounds like the drive from the motor to the needle head has worn or is broken. You really need an engineer for this one. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I just bought a janome mini sewing machine. I

First, in order to get the bobbin thread up, you have to turn the wheel backward, not forward. If you try this, and it is not the problem, keep going.

Next you need to check the needle. There is a screw on the right side of the needle carriage right underneath the underside of the top...unscrew this and the needle should come right out. The flat side of the needle shank should go towards the back of the machine. If it isn't, switch it so that it is and try again.

If this doesn't solve your problem, what has happened is that the gears in the machine have gotten out of alignment. There is an easy fix:

Take off the plate that covers the bobbin chase...there are two screws one on each side. Remove these...you need a stub screwdriver, because regular ones will not fit under there.

Remove the bobbin carriage and the bobbin, making careful note of how they fit back in. Take a picture before disassembling it so you have a reference.

The part that carries the thread around the bobbin is still in the machine. Turn the wheel and you will see it rotate. What has happened is that the needle is not going down in the machine at the right point because someone kept sewing after it jammed and one gear kept going while the other one didn't and now it is out of alignment. These machines have plastic gears and the can slip past each other if you aren't careful not to stop immediately when they jam.

To fix it, you are going to have to do some trial and error. Grab the rotating part of the bobbin chase and hold it firmly. Rotate the wheel forward until you hear it click once. Then rotate the wheel backward again and see if it grabs the top thread. If it doesn't, repeat holding the bobbin chase and turning the wheel forward until it does.

Once you have the gears basically aligned, you will need to reassemble everything. Put the face plate back on and put at least one of the screws in all the way. The face plate holds the bobbin chase in correctly and if you don't fasten it it will not work correctly.

Now try sewing. If it starts to jam, stop immediately, cut the threads and look at the back. If it's a loopy mess, you are going to have to dissamble as before and again grasp the bobbin chase and turn the wheel forward one more click, then reassemble and try again. Eventually, you will find exactly the right alignment and the machine will sew perfectly.

I just had to make this fix on my own machine...I didn't want to take it in for repair because the bench fee alone would cost as much as the machine did!

There are some great video's on YouTube for help with threading the machine...look for StampTV and you should find them. Good luck!

Sewing Machine Needles

Did you know sewing machine needles can be machined wrong? If your machine isn't picking up the thread, try replacing the needle. If the scarf isn't in the correct place, the hook can't pick up the thread.

My pfaff 1222e isn't working the motor runs but the needle doesn't move ~ the knob at the end of the machine won't turn at all

Check for thread jams... hopefully that's the problem and not a bent shaft in the thing.

Needle is hard to move up and down

try changing the needle
clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or threads
rethread the machine top & bobbin
make sure the bobbin isn't too full
make sure the bobbin is not damaged or warped & that it is the right
bobbin for the machine
make sure the bobbin is turned the right way in the bobbin case
if none of these suggestions help then the machine needs to be
checked at a repair shop

My machine is new and worked briefly but now . . . . the machine is threaded correctly and the bobbin is placed correctly. When turning the knob for the initial pick up of the bobbin thread, it does not...

You have described your problem just fine. Have you just changed the needle in your machine? If so, check it is in the right way, you want the flat shank to the back.

The needle has a scarf (scoop out) at the back - if it is facing to the front then the rotary hook (bit that goes around the bobbin and catches the top thread) can't catch the needle thread behind the needle.

Also check needle is fully up into the housing, this could also cause problem.

I'd suggest that you visit www.sewingabout.com and check out the pages on general sewing machine use, care and threading up, lots of helpful pictures and information which may be of assistance to you.

If it isn't your needle backwards (very easy to get wrong, happens all the time), then the timing could be out, which isn't so easy, but as its new I'd be very suprised if this was the fault. Just check needle, make sure top and bottom threads are threaded correctly and have another go. Also, remember to turn flywheel towards you.
