Question about Tomtom GO 700 GPS Receiver
I use my 720 infrequently. If I leave it for more than a week It will drain the battery. I worry that the battery will suffer in the long run and wonder how I can
is there any way I can power off the unit )not stand by) so that the battery will keep its charge over time (for months)
What you report is very very common. It's also common with other electronic stuff with similar type batteries. I ahve a portable DVD that charges OK 100% and will run for hours after a full charge but If I( charge it , then leave it for a day , the battery has gone flat or nearly flat . Doesnt present any problem or appear to do harm to the battery as it's been like this for about 2 years now. It's just inconvenient , thats all.
My Tomtom is the same , so I did a little modification . I used a read switch ( very tiny ) and broke into the battery cable inside the tomtom and connected the 2 resulting ends to the read switch then positioned the read switch at the back of the tomtom so it would be near to the tomtom mount when affixed . I then glued a small magnet onto the tomtom mount. The result is : The battery inside the tomtom is made disconnected when the read switch opens and it opens when its taken off the mount because it needs the magnet to be closed. ie . the read switch closed when a magnet is put near it and opens when a magnet is removed ( read switch is magneticly operated ). So now my battery doesnt drain as it has no connection to it to drain through. The tomtom will only switch on when its slotted onto it's mount . good luck.
