SOURCE: just replaced head gasket, now has to much compression

A head gasket will not greatly increase the compression in a a Briggs motor.

My question is Why did it need a head gasket to begin with?
Will bet it was not running...

A more likely cause if not a fuel problem is to check engine oil if that is good remove the wire from the low oil sensor and see it it will start up for you.

I think you had a question on the compression on a lawn mower? I repair them from time to time and would not recommend repairing a lawn mower below 55 lbs. psi. I really try only to wonk on lawn mowers with 65 lbs. psi or better. Sometime you can help the compression if you tighten the spark plug or top head bolt but you have to be careful not to tighten them too much. Usually when you have low compression you either have wear on the piston rings or leak on the flat head gasket. Usually if you have over head valves if there is a small leak it can be repaired with silicone gasket material. I hope that answers your question. MJ

HOW DO I PUT HEAD GASKETS IN MY 178 JD LAWN MOWER

Well, first of all, do you need to replace the head gaskets? Can you give me more info? Is this on a rider, what size engine and brand. What is your level of expertise? If you have a blown head gasket, you need to figure our what or why did this happen.

This should be relatively easy, once you remove all shrouds, then remove the head bolts, the the head will come off, replace the gasket, or gaskets if a twin, and torque the headbolts in a star pattern. Depending on the size of the engine will determine your torque settings.

Unjam mower starter cord

If you mean that you cannot pull the engine over then remove your spark plug and try with plug out. If it turns over with no plug in then you probably have a carboned up head. Remove head and carbon and reinstall head with a new head gasket.

Mower run 4 or 5 minute start smoking what is the problem

Hi,
Thanks for posting your question and I will do my best to provide an accurate answer.
The symptoms you describe lead me to believe that you have a defective head gasket on one or two of you cylinders. The head gaskets fail between the valve pushrod area through which oil passes to lubricate the valves and the cylinder bore. this allows oil to pass into the combustion chamber causing the oil to burn and cause the smoking.
It is not uncommon and is a relatively inexpensive repair. The head gaskets cost around 20 dollars and the labor to remove the engine shrouds, carburetion, intake manifold, exhaust system to access the cylinder head should be three to four hours. It is very wise to replace both head gaskets since the labor to change the other is 1/2 hour or so vs. three or four again if the other fails a short time later.
I hope this answers your question.

i would say it is the head gasket , there is only a little space between the valve train and the piston, and this is where the gasket lets go, when the piston goes down on intake or power it sucks the oil past the gasket then out the exaust valve

Have a toro recycler white smoke continuous after starting

This is not a good sign!! You have blown a head gasket, the rings around the piston have gone bad, or you have blown a hole in the piston. The head gasket isn't so serious, and it may be worth fixing. However, the other two scenarios are serious and wouldn't be worth fixing if the mower is old.

Good Luck!

I have a mountfield sp470 petrol self proppelled lawn mower. the engine is briggs& stratton but i dont know the engine model. i need this as the cylinder head gasket has gone and needs replacing.

Hi. The SP470 has a 4 HP Briggs and Stratton engine.

The part number should be 687171 and you can look here:

http://www.worldofmowers.ltd.uk/Products/ProductList.aspx?search=Head+gasket+&type=3&searchBtton.x=20&searchBtton.y=10

Take a good look at the valve end of the head gasket. From the pictures on the page you should be able to see which one of the 4 head gaskets on the page is yours.

If you have yellow pages you can look up lawn mower repair. Or small engine repair shops. All of them should have this commonly used headgasket in stock. Just find one close to you or.. use the link above.

Here is yet another link for the head gaskets but you have to scroll way way down the page or page search for 698717 or 272171.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

The gas float could be sticking in the Carburator. Gas will go down the intake, into the piston, down the cylinder walls and into the oil.
