Question about Canon ZR500 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I have had my ZR500 camera for about 2 years now. Everything works fine with it, but ran into an issue.
I stopped using it for a while about 5 months ago. I was having a problem where I would upload the video to my computer and when I started to play it, the video would fast forward by itself for about 3-5 second, then play normally.
I recently began to use my camera again, but now when I record something and attempt to play it back, the screen shows only a blue image, which usually comes up when the part of the tape I am on does not have anything recorded on it.
During the time I did not use my camera, it was kept in a safe area and I'm sure that it did not fall at all. There seems to be an issue with whatever reads the tape. If anyone has a way to fix this, please tell me. Thank you,
Clean the read write heads - if it has been stored with a tape in it, then the tape could have left a deposit on the heads.

Thank you, I actually found the solution to this problem. We called Canon and they tried, but ultimately could only suggest that the unit needed to be cleaned. The gentleman we spoke to had not heard of this particular problem. But we decided we had nothing to lose, so we bought a Mini DV cleaner at Wal-Mart for less than $20 and it actually worked. Hopefully, this post will help someone else if they run across the same, apparently rare problem. Thank you, Angela

I have the same issue and have for over a year (haven't had the time to send it to Canon for a few weeks to analyze, but have cleaned it numerous times). But I can tell you that the problem is internittent and the recordings are fine. Eventually, don't know the remedy, but it will suddenly stop doing that and I can download fine, and watch on camera fine. When it does happen, I just keep recording. It never shows up permanently. I re-tyr downloading or viewing and about the 3rd or 3th time (let it sit for a few hours between) it is normal!

I think that when you shake it, the battery tends to move around and makes the camera lose power and when you stop shaking the battery settles and runs normally.

2. This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.
