I have a Gateway computer desktop I rebooted it to factory settings running service pack 2 Windows XP no computer will not update from Windows Update site or download anything

Since April 2014 Microsoft ended support for Windows XP and that means no more updates for Windows.
You still can get from Microsoft's websites some of the updates and pacthes but you should look for specific files. As there are about 150 updates, I have way to help you giving the listing and anyway it would be some enless job to do. Maybe your best option should be to get Windows XP SP3 with all latest updates at some forum.
Anyway, keeping legal, if you reinstalled XP SP2 you should download and install SP3
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT...

Windows Update still migth be usefult to get updates for MS Office 2007 and upwards, Windows Defender, etc..

You should forget about using Internet Explorer 8, it is obsolete by now and no way to update it. IE9 won't run on XP. So, far best option is Firefox

Why I can't install my Optiplex 360 sound drivers? It says: the operating system is not supported by this software.I use Windows XP SP3 after I formatted my HDD besause of BSoD. Please, I really need this...

it usually means that it doesn't have the correct driver for that version of windows. Reinstall windows again but this time do not update the windows. let it stay with the current version because that driver is built in for that version. After reinstalling the windows and the driver, that's the time you can update your windows to the SP3. Frankl, it would be better if you do not update to SP3 at all. It usually slows down your computer which gives an error or a BSOD.

You can also check the manufacturer's website for any update on any of it's drivers for that model.

Norton wont remove from my pc

This problem is so common that Symantec has developed the Norton Removal Tool, available here:)

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

That is assuming you can get to a Windows desktop and the 'black screen' you mention does not come during the startup...

Since you do not seem intent on reinstalling, do not worry about saving the license key. There are plenty of good freeware programs for antivirus. At a minimum your should have Windows Defender and AVG Free Edition.

If you have SP2 or SP3, install Windows Defender from Microsoft first. It is self explanatory, free and available here:)

Note you must be running a legal copy of Windows XP for this to install.

The other antivirus I would suggest is AVG Free Edition, which is available from here:)

Please post comments on your progress and results.

I wish to install Windows Vista Home Premium. I already have Windows XP. I pay for Norton Internet Security by direct debit through Tiscali and have done so since, 2006. I have run Norton Liveupdate. ...

You will need to cancel your Norton subscription and use one of their products that is suitable for Vista. May I suggest that you purchase Norton Internet security 2009 for a single payment of about 70 dollars.

Where or how to get the update programme for Norton 360 which is advised while my subscription is current.

If your system has been set up right, you should be getting update regularly automatically but if not.. you may want to speak with a rep from Norton directly and they should be able to clarify thiings for you.. Here is a link to their service site http://www.tech24.com/html03_tech24_866-434-1660/

Good luck

Hi girl7, When you tried to use your Norton CD it did a quick scan & saw another Norton anti- visus on your system, that is why it wouldn't install. The Norton's on your PC should give you a free one year subscription. So this is what I suggest you use. Check your PC & see if Norton is allready installed. Here's how to. Left click on the start button once & slide up to Control Panel & left click on it. Windows Control Panel will open. Double left click on the Add/Remove programs icon. It will open. Scroll down & keep an eye open for Norton Antivirus or any Norton software program. If you see a Norton Program here, than Norton is already installed on your PC. You should find a Norton icon down by the clock as well. If you right click once on the Norton icon by the clock a pop-up will open & left click open. Question, you mentioned you have an open account with you at this time. Who do you have an account with? A link to your question you posted at FixYa is located at the top of this email along with a copy of that posting. Most tech's at FixYa will not suggest answer's to people's personal email address for two reasons. 1. We answer you & hundred's of peoples questions free & on our own time. 2. Most people who do receive a answer through their personal emal address do not return to FixYa & vote. Food for thought. Here's one more suggestion. When your Norton Anitvirus software subscription is up, save yourself some money by downloading a free antivirus program. Just click the link listed below to AVG. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0 If you need or have more questions please post it at FixYa by signing into your account. You can also look for my FixYa user name by clicking Find Experts on the main page I'll be listed there. Good Luck & Kind Regards.
