the power trim is a simple hydraulic ram/s that hold the angle by having hydraulic oil pressure locked off by the control valve
if it keeps falling down that indicates either a problem control valve ( seat damaged, weak spring, adjustment)or a failed ram/ piston seal or a scored cylinder that is allowing the oil to leak past the piston/s
the relief valve would only come into operation when the unit reaches full extension of the ram/s to prevent overloading of the system
As it operates in adverse conditions, it is possible that there is corrosion in the cylinders allowing the bypass of the hydraulic pressure to happen
discuss the problem with a service center as it will not be an uncommon problem and they may have the answer as to what to repair/replace to fix it

Where is the hydraulic pressure trip valve on a farmall 450.

Obviously not a hot water heater so my guess is this is a tractor. as such, I'm not completely sure but I think the flow control and pressure reg is between the reservoir and the lift controls and although it might be giving you some problems try bleeding out the air at the top of the control valves before changing it.

The problem will be in the relief valve area of the pump. Check settings . Check that the relief valve hose is not blocking from internal failure. Check that the relief valve piston is not jammed from foreign bodies from unfiltered oil (dirt-rust etc)

The relief valve may be by-passing, or your pump is cavitating..If you can hear a hissing... its the relief...if you hear whining or chuttering sounds... it is the pump cavitating. It sounds much like a power steering pump. Check your fluid level. **Note There may be water in the system if the oil is really milky looking, also from the cavitation of the pump which causes air in system. And then....Go from there or ask more.
