My washer also sounds like a jet taking off during the final spin. It use to be quiet until recently.

Spin cycle very loud. Has a slight vibration and washer does not move about when in spin cycle. It's a Maytag Neptune Front Load, Model #MDG5500AWW. Purchased on 1-16-2001

Yes, I have the same jet engine in my laundry room! We have already repaired it once before for around $600. And it isn't worth doing it again. Was there a recall on this Maytag Neptune? I purchased it around 2001 as well.

Sounds like a 747 taking off of an aircraft carrier. Is there any easy fix. Can it be run in this mode?

  • Snow man Jan 24, 2009

Same problem here, since Nov 2008, starting to see some rusty water underneath, opened the back, found out that the rotor pulley is showing some rustwater on itcoming out from the bearing....looks like the bearing is shot.....!!

I have a stacking Neptune set. Same airport!! Was told it was a bearing that went bad due to NOT USING HE DETERGENT!! Who the hell ever heard of HE detergent. Seems the suds from reg. detergent creates pressure in the machine that messes with the seals and eventually wrecks the bearing. I was not ever made aware of the need for HE detergent and now my 5 year old machine is fodder for the landfill. A repair will run roughly a grand, I am not willing to hand any more money over to Maytag.

That **** about the Maytag repairman being lonely??? It aint because they dont need repair...it's because nobody trusts Maytag anymore!!

Oh, BTW...my repair consultant said the usual life expectancy for these over priced pieces of junk is between 4-7 years. So much for being efficient!

ALL MACHINES ARE JUNK AND START FALLING APART IN ABOUT A YEAR. FIND A RESONABLE REPAIR SHOP AND FIX IT. CHEAPER THAN BUYING A MACHINE EVERY OTHER YEAR !! MOST WARRANTIES ARE ONLY A YEAR ANYWAY

YEA!!!!!! thats a bad rear bearing, depending on age, id call a local authorized maytag servicer and see what they get to repalce it for you, perhaps you still have a part warr on certain parts, otherwise irts not worth the cost of repair

SOURCE: Neptune washer load noise.

I do know there is a set of bearings on the drum drive shaft. There is an inner and an outer. Some places mention that these bearings are no longer available. However, I found on ebay a gentlemen who sells these bearing and the seals in a kit for about $80.00. It comes with instructions on how to repair and will save a lot of money. I have done this once already to the same washer, now I am doing it again. If you search on ebay maytag neptune parts you will find his listing for a bearing kit. He also describes the jet engine noise.

SOURCE: Very loud noise during spin cycle

Probably a broken strut or support. some call it a shock absorber.

SOURCE: loud noises during spin cycles

Hello, If the noise is a squealing or grinding sound, you are likely looking at a bad seal and bearing.
If the noise is a knocking sound, it's more likely a suspension or out of balance condition.
Thanks

Loud Jet Engine Noise

Erik? Do you either live next to an airport or on an approach pattern? Just wondering! No really...IF Your machine is making THAT much noise! Jeeze! You have a balance drum bearing gone! Maybe more. There are usually four of them located on the corners of the drum. They are throw away and buy new anywhere from $20-40 each. If you have no idea what I am talking about and your machine is over 7 yrs old. Get a new One!

Jet Plane noise in spin cycle

The bearing in the outer tub assembly is going out and you will need to replace it. Here is the part if you want to order it but you might want to look into buying another machine.

Hi! My GE front loading washer is stopping during the spin cycle, and will not spin. The problem was preceded by louder than usual spin cycles. Any suggestions??

Sounds like the main center bearing is going bad that's why it is not wanting to spin on its own and is also making the loud noise when its spinning i.e. sounding like a jet engine firing up or metal grinding noise. The bearing is probably welded to the shaft now. I would not repair this very expensive cost around $300 to $600 to fix I would go buy a good quality used one or a new one sorry for the bad news but that's what it is I see 2 of these a week in my shop same problem but hope this helps.

Make a really loud noise during the spin cycle

I would check the wash tub. Remove any clothes and examine how the tub sits in the opening. If it is sagging it could mean that the support arms are broken.

Try turning it by hand. It should turn smoothly without any noise. When the washer is in the spin cycle does it sound like a jet engine? If it does, it probally needs new bearings. It can be expensive to fix. Get a few estimates. Hope this helps you.

Loud noise during spin cycle.

If it sounds like a jet engine and gets louder the faster it spins you have bad bearings and that wont hurt anything. If your using pwder soap that is what made the bearings go out so switch to liquid and it shouldnt get much worse.

Loud noise on spin cycle

How did that answer get an 83% rating? It is absolutely useless. My washer has the exact same problem as described above.During the spin cycle it sounds like a jet engine. It kinda sounds like the belt hitting the drive wheel but may be bearings in the motor.

Noise during wash and rinse cycles

Got a response from another site - the noise was due to the recirculation pump (situated low down at the back on the other side from the drain hose) which was working, but clogged with a nasty grey 'porridge' of limescale and powder residue in the pipes either side of it. Dismantled, cleaned out pipes and ran a wash cycle to clear any remaining crud out. Seems ok now and wash jet working, noise gone.
