If your PSP is working all but the display, meaning you can here the sounds of clicking past the menu items when you press the D-pad in different direction, you have a Backlight burned out. This is a very complicated task to replace your backlight without good training and knowledge of the internal construction of your PSP. If you have never replaced the LCD in a PSP, I highly suggest getting it repaired professionally.
Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. Then on the next page, Click on "Video Game Consoles" Pick a good Repairman that has experience working on PSP's. I would not use any repair guy who has never replaced the LCD in a PSP.
For your first PSP: there is a loose conection of LCD Screen with the motherboard and the solution is as follow:
You can open the PSP and just lift the LCD Screen up be sure before lifting LCD Screen one thin Switch panel of micro buttons Home,VOL,select etc, you have to remove this first then only it is possible to lift the LCD Screen and after that you check that broad connection strip which is fixed with the motherboard socket you remove it this strip and refixed it again, your problem should get solved if suppose your LCD Screen is not broken.
