Ran over a steel stake that locked up the blades and killed the engine.

Removed jam, everything free, but engine will not start. Is there a safety reset?

Mower starts but shuts off when put in gear or engage blades

Sounds like a safety switch is bad. The most likely culprit is the seat switch, which detects operator presence. If the switch is bad it will not detect an operator in the seat which will kill the engine if a gear is selected or the blades are engaged. It is located under the seat and easy to replace. Start there and let me know, Daniel.

Replace switches & clutch. When brake is release everything dies. Ineed a wiring diagram.

There are a few safety switches on a riding mower. One is the brake clutch, which must be engaged to start mower if not in neutral for a manual transaxle. Another is a blade engaged safety that will not allow you to start it with the blades engaged and the other is the seat safety that prevents starting if the brake is not engaged.

If the seat safety switch is messed up and you release the brake it will kill the engine. I would start there.

I hope this helps get you going.

Every time I use the lever to get the blades started it kills the engine. it does it even after i removed the belt. what is causing the blade rotation lever to kill the engine?

hi there talane

sounds like you have a safety switch problem

try disconnecting seat switch and retry if works could be wire grounding some where or faulty switch then try fitting a jump wire to seat switch wire connector then retry then check blade engagement switch may be playing up or a nuetral switch playing up but more likely a seat switch

with operator off seat and park brake on engine runs, but with pk brake off and operator off seat
engine stops , same if operator leaves seat and blades engages -engine stops,

if unit not in nuetral and pk brake not on unit wont start

take look

hope it helps

I have a 46"lawn tractor murray,when i engage the

I would start by splitting the systems. remove the ground wire that goes to the spark plug coil kill wire.
If the engine runs with the blades on then, the problem is in the chasis or safety switches. if you still have the problem it is the engine. Maybe the engine can not produce enough power to spin the blades.
This could be because of the common deck spindle bearing lock up or the engine being worn out.

After you do the test if you need parts contact a shop like www.arcolawn.com and they can ship you the parts.

Cheers
Joe

My tractor keeps shutting off when i engage the mower blades

It would depend on what model, but could either be a deck drive problem or safety switch. With tractor off, I'd check the blades for free movement with no binding. If this is ok, then I would suspect the seat switch. The mower will not run with the deck engaged, and no operator present. It could be the seat switch is not making, so when you engage the deck it kills the motor. Test switch

Started up...then died as if safety switch 18HP craftsman rider

On later models there are possibly three safety switches, one under the seat, one for the blade engage mechanism or blade clutch so the blades don't turn when the mower is started, and a neutral safety switch to make sure the mower is in neutral before it starts.
