I have this vacuum since 2001. It broke 3 belts last 6 months. Now I smell plastic burning during use. What could be wrong?
The model number is 116.31800C. I bought from Sears Canada.

- Thanks. I dissembled the vacuum to its parts. Looks like the motor is fine. I have to clean the motor axle since rubber have stuck on it. I notice that the surface of the axle is not smooth within half centimeter of the end of axle. I brought it to Sears and showed it to the sales person. She told me that those are ribs designed to stop belt from slipping off. I am not sure about that. I did check the bearing. A lot of hairs are caught behind one of the bearing. It is not easy to get them out. It seems that I have to remove the bearing. Do I need a special tool to remove the bearing? How can I remove and install the bearing?
-   I have the same recurring problem with broken belts, but servicing the brush roller has not solved the problem. We just paid a high-end vacuum repair guy to have a look at it and the new belt broke on its first use while running in the bare floor mode, so the roller brush wasn't even running. Is this just a design flaw? What does Sears have to say to everyone with this problem? I took apart the end caps of the roller brush and the washers, as shown in the manual, aren't even there. They either don't exist or fell out. The vacuum works fine on bare floors with no belt in place, but I desperately need to do my carpets.-   Guest

-   I think the problem is the replacement belts are too tight.
Does anyone know if the carpet capstan goes over top or under the belt?
It could be the tightness of the belt causes the rubber to adhere to axel.
Happens on mine regularly, then burning rubber and belt breaks.
Lost manual. so if anyone can describe how to correctly install the belt (photo? or word picture? ) that would help.
Yes hairs can get wound around brush roller, so keeping it clean & hair/string free is essential for easy rotation.
-   I have the same problem but there is melting of the end cap that holds the belt. I have cleaned out all the hair that was caught on both sides, but the end cap is melted. what now? -   j2k2sc
It sounds like the brushroll has caused your belt problem and will be the cause of your burning smell as well. What commonly occurs is that carpet fiber, hair, string, thread, etc got wound around the brushroll and some will get caught in the end caps which is where the bearings are.The end caps need to be removed and cleaned so that the bearings can allow the brush to rotate freely.Check that there is no melting of the end caps or the base plate where the end caps fit into the machine._Good Luck
