1. When you press the power button to turn it on, do you see any thing on screen, like the toshiba boot up screen or something like that. Or is it completely blank (black color) always.
2. Can you see a faint image of your desktop (try to see it in dark place with flash light). This is important to confirm.
3. Also, when you press power button, do you see the LED lights on laptop blinking or solid green (which ones are in blinking/solid) and do hear any sound ? Or do you feel that your laptop doesnt even try to boot.
4. Can you hear any Beeps when you try to turn on the computer. If yes, what is the sequence of those beeps.
If you answers are -
2. no image
3. only the satellite light is blue, the powercord is blue and the battery is blue
4. no noise
Please do the following carefully and let me know result : 1. Shutdown and Unplug your laptop. 2. Remove the battery from the laptop. 3. Wait 2-3 minutes 4. Now press ON (power button on laptop) for 1 minute 5. Then release the finger and wait one more minute. 6. Now plug in the power cable (dont insert battery yet) and press ON button. 7. Did your screen start working now ? (do you see windows loading)
It could either be that the motherboard is fried or the Hard drive has just gotten slightly corrupted. If you have the Windows install disk that came with it you could boot that up and then go into repair mode (press R) and then run "chkdsk /r" this would fix a hard drive issue. However if your laptop will not turn on at all when you press the power button then it is likely dead.
Move the power jack around while plugged in, does the blinking on the battery stop when you hold it in certain positions? If so, your dc-jack needs to be soldered, but i probably was loose already before you started using it. It could be a broken motherboard issue as well. You can try to open the laptop and check the dc connection. There is a Laptop Repair Guide that shows you how to take apart a laptop, the sony may be made in a similar way. Sony Repair NYC
This happened to me. In order to fix it, unplug the power source and take out the battery. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Then plug back in the power source and the battery and power up the laptop.
This is called resetting the power cycle and should fix it.
Flickering LED means power supply is overloaded with something. It might be inside of the supply, but sometimes it is something else. Try that: 1. Disconnect everything from the motherboard except power supply and power button; 2. Disconnect all power connectors from all drives; 2. Remove any cards from the motherboard so all you have is power supply and motherboard with CPU and RAM, nothing else. You can keep connected the monitor and keyboard; 3. Press Power button. Will motherboard turn on normally?
If no - check electrolytic capacitors especially around the CPU, if some of them are "popped" replace them. If yes - connect drives and cards one per time to localize the problem.
Maybe there are some problem in your start button (the button wire connect to mainboard is Loosening.
Please press the start button for about 3-4 seconds then see it would start. Always it may solve the problem, this happend to my inspiron 6400 too, after used for years the start button failure. It shows only power lamp lights green but the other light cant light red.
If no, maybe your must change a power supply, as the lower volt current cant start all the device.
