Keyboard typing numbers instead letters

Hi Tiffany,
The Numlock on your laptop is on that is why instead of letters you are getting numbers. In order to get it back to letters please check the key that says Num Lock where the green light is lit up all you have to do is to press it again to disable Num Lock. If in case you can't see it you may want to try pressing Fn + F11 once and check if you are still getting numbers, press Fn + F11 to disable it. Hope it helps.

Assuming you want to enter a name into the directory, simply keep pressing the appropriate key until you get the desired letter. For example, if you want one of "ABC" then keep pressing the "2" key to cycle through these letters.

Medion notebook typing normally. getting numbers instead of letters

Examine your keyboard to ensure your "Number Lock" key is not activated.

This activation is indicated by the key being lit up.

If the key is activated, press it to deactivate the lock.

The number lock key will deactivate an entire segment of your keyboard

Start, click Run, and type regedit to open the Windows registry editor.

In the registry, open the below folders.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Control Panel\
Keyboard\

Within the keyboard folder, you should have a string value named "InitialKeyboardIndicators" with a value of 0, 1, or 2. Below is the explanation of each of these values.

0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after the logon.
1 = Disable Num Lock.
2 = Numlock is turned ON after the logon.

hope this helps

That means you have the Num Lk (Number Lock)key on. And when you Press and Hold the FN function key at the lower left portion of the keyboard plus the keys you specified above the number appears instead of the letter.

Just hit your Num Lk key at the top of the keyboard to turn it off.

Oh yes, I have had this happen before and it sucks.

This problem is usually just due to having Num lock on. Try pressing the num lock button on your keyboard and see if this makes a difference. In the smaller notebooks and netbooks they combine the numbers and letters onto the same keys using num lock to distinguish the mode.

I think on your model the num lock button will be towards the top right of the keyboard. You may also have to press the FN (function) button at the same time, but I am not sure.

Also there should be a small led that illuminates or goes dark to inform you when num lock/scroll lock/caps lock are enabled/disabled.

Numbers coming up instead of letters

There's a key on the keyboard that turns a "grid" of the alphabetic characters into a "grid' of numbers, like you would find on an adding-machine.

Press that key, to disable the "numeric pad" functionality.

I cant undo the fn key on the mini note

You should be able to turn off the built in numeric keypad by pressing the fn key and the num lk simultaneously. The num lk is directly above the +/= key. If after doing this you still find you only momentarily turn off the numeric keyboard then there is another underlying issue. At that point you should take your unit to your area HP repair center.
