You will have to reinstall the keyboard software that would have come on a CD along with your system.

I have just bought a second hand Compaq 5185 keyboard and I would like to know how to configure the special top buttons. Some work, others don't.

Certain models of HP desktop computer come with an "Internet Keyboard" packaged in with the other equipment. This Internet Keyboard differs from a regular keyboard in that it has a series of buttons along the sides that allow you to do things like open your Web browser with the tap of a button. You can reassign the actions to these keys and reprogram it away from its default settings using your Control Panel.

Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Click "Keyboard." Click the "Hardware" tab, then click the "Properties" button. Click the listing for the Internet keyboard key you want to change. In the "Target" box, select the program you want that key to open. Click "Apply." The specified key will now open the specified program. Repeat this step for all of the other keys on your Internet keyboard that you want to configure.

You could have your keyboard settings set to a different language.

option 1 (Language Settings)
1) Click [Start]
2) Control Panel
3) Regional and Language Options
4) Click on the Languages tab
5) Click on the [Details...] button
6) Check if the Default input language is set to English US
and
under installed services, check if the keyboard is set to 'US'

option 2 (Driver issues)
1) click [Start]
2) Control Panel
3) Keyboard
4) Click on the Hardware Tab and select the Keyboard then:
a) use the [Troubleshoot...] button or
b) click on properties, select the Driver Tab, Uninstall driver and press [Ok]
reboot your laptop. It should reconfigure your laptop keyboard drivers.

option 3 (Hardware issues)
If you have a PC, try connecting that keyboard to your laptop and see if that works. If it does then your keyboard maybe bad.

Keyboard and mouse pad not working, i think i locked it out with a simple function key

try blowing out all of the dust from your laptop keyboard using a fine air blower from an air compressor making VERY sure there is no MOISTURE in the lines.
dust causes static which causes lots of problems with a computer and its parts
or if this does not fix the problem
click start control panel keyboard you can change your settings there
or you might have uninstall the keyboard restart your computer then reinstall it and its drivers
click start control panel keyboard hardware then properties you should see driver details, you will have options to update driver, roll back driver, uninstall
make sure you have the driver for the keyboard before uninstalling the driver
make sure the lead is good and has a secure connection diconnect the keyboard then reconnect it then reinstall the driver
as for the mouse
click start control panel mouse you should see 4 tabs buttons, pointers, pointer options also hardware under hardware you can troubleshoot or
select properties under driver you will have the options to update driver, rollback driver or uninstall and under hardware you can troubleshoot
in xp
hope this helps

Laptop top keyboard will not function appropriately unless Dynex separate keyboard is used. I am unable to identify the Dynex device to uninstall. First listed states Std 101/102 Keyboard and the other HID...

Hi, these instructions will help you, first, click on the "Start" button, in the "Start Search Window, Type: keyboard; the "Keyboard's" Properties window will open. You can (Test) to see exactly how your keyboard is responding. if you are still having the same problem, (check the Keyboard Status), try "Updating the Drivers," by clicking on the "Properties" button. Now in the event that neither of these solutions solve the problem, which I hope you shouldn't have to do anymore; try "Uninstalling the Keyboard. To "Uninstall the "keyboard," do the following. Shut-down (turn- off completely), disconnect all the Keyboard Devices that are attached to the computer. Next, turn-on the computer, and go back to the "Keyboard Properties," this time click on the "Change Settings" button, next click on the "Driver" button, and select the "Uninstall" button. Once that is finished, shut-down the computer again. Now you want to "Reconnect" all the devices that were connected before, and "Turn-on" the computer. You will repeat exactly what you did from the start, this will "Reinstall the Keyboard. Restart the computer again after all changes have been made; this will ensure the changes take place properly. "Rating the solution will let me know if it worked, or you may need further assistance, thanks."

I was being nosey hitting buttons and now my laptop is locked

The I button is another one of those unnecessary things PC makers do to try to be more convenient. This one is a programmable button for your favorite or frequently used programs.

Use F8 to boot to Safe mode, then:

Using the Keyboard and Touch Pad In Microsoft® Windows® XP
  1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Under Pick a category, click Printers and Other Hardware, click Keyboard, and then click the AccessDirect tab.

  3. Click Help, and follow the instructions.

In Windows 2000
  1. Open the Control Panel, and then double-click the Keyboard icon.

  2. Click the AccessDirect tab in the Keyboard Properties window.

  3. Click Help, and follow the instructions.
