The following formats can be played on Windows media player:
avi
mov
mp4
mpg
mpeg
Normally DVD players cannot read compressed formats, if you have a regular DVD/MP3 player, that wont read any of the formats above, or with some luck will read only uncoded Avi, mov or mpeg.
The formats above are all compressed formats, and often they need additional software call codecs, they can be read on computers, but they generally are not working on dvd players.
To be sure that a DVD will read compressed computer movies, you need a special DVD player with Divx , like the one below:

you get so many formats because each company that produces software worked in developing his own proper format, for example apple developed Quicktime Mov, Real. com the RM format etc.
Majority of new DVD readers can read blank DVD recorded on computer, you must check that they have DVD +RW DVD -RW written on specifics.
Many new DVD also read automatically Divx, and accept all common computer file formats.
