If it is the firmware password protection, then the only way to have that reset is by taking the macbook to an authorized repair center or Apple Store.

If the issue is with the operating system password, then you'll need the original system CD that came with the Macbook. Power-on the Macbook and immediately insert the system install disk and then press and hold the C key down until the circular icon stops spinning.

You'll then be able to select Disk Utilities that you can use to reset your password.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Do you mean the behind the keyboard backlight or something else?
As far as I'm aware only the macbook Pro models have KB backlighting so without a motherboard change you are probably out of luck

Forgot admin password

From the Apple Support Forum for MacBook (yes, 3 generations later than yours.)
"With the original install discs that came with the MacBook, you can reset the administrator's password. Follow the instructions for "Resetting the original administrator account password" in this document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274"
