Reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition on Gateway 500XL
First off, I have the reinstalling CD set that came with the computer. I have already cleared out my harddrive and formated with NTFS but then at about 23% of the setup, it said that " 'driver.cab' couldn't be found and to insert the correct cd" so inserted all of them (1 at a time) and nothing yet.
I was then told by my mom that she had the computer fixed by Gateway back in 2005; and their techs used different CDs to reboot & reinstall Windows XP Home Edition.
I am willing to start completely over since I got frustrated and pressed the escape button to skip part of the install; which I know is bad.
Thank You in advance

If only you knew. The first windows disk didn't work (obviously). I bought a new one and, of course that didn't work either. Crushed my glasses by taking them off and leaving them under the processing unit. Tried an old hard drive that I had from an old computer. This worked, then I found the Windows disk supplied by Gateway in the front of my filing cabinet in the most obvious place. Wasted my pension plus the cost of some new varifocals. Old Age strkes again. If only you knew. The first windows disk didn't work (obviously). Re: Reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition on Gateway 500XL
It is all to do with the installation. You will need to install windows freshly. the disks you are using sound like they are recovery disks but if you have formatted your harddrive then they may not work.
if you have a windows disk and are trying to load it and are having problems doing this then let me know
without a windows disk there is not much else you can do, except purchase one or take the pc to a shop to get it repaired.without a windows disk there is not much else you can do, except purchase one or take the pc to a shop to get it repaired.
I am glad that you have got it working again, it is a shame you had to replace your HDD but at least you have your computer back, I know how frustrating it can be without one.I am glad that you have got it working again, it is a shame you had to replace your HDD but at least you have your computer back, I know how frustrating it can be without one.

It means that your computer is missing a file that windows xp needs to run boot properly or is missing a program that your home edition xp needs. Repairing the OS or windows xp home edition by means of your xp instalation cd will do the job. Just insert your xp installation disk to your cd/dvd rom and select install windows xp home edition. Then select ( repair ), and so on let it finish repairing . Once your system rebooted, let it run without pressing enter or space bar. Just watch and let your computer do the job. This will probably solve your boot problem. But before doing all of this, please check your IDE or SATA cable and also the power cable that is connected to your hard drive. Try to unplug and plug again to ensure a good connection. If this won't work, you can proceed repairing Your windows xp installation or reinstalling a new xp operating system. Have a nice day and i hope i was in any help to you friend.
Find a friend with either a "retail" Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM disk,
or with an 'OEM' ("original equipment manufacturer") equivalent.
Use that disk, plus the 25-character product-key on the label on the side of your computer,
to reinstall Windows, or first to try to "repair" your installed copy of Windows.
Or, if you have a "brand-name" computer (Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Acer, Gateway, eMachines)
telephone the manufacturer, and order a replacement "System Restore" set of CD-ROM disks.
Probably about $20, plus $20 for overnight-courier.

Hi there. Clean the lens on the CD/DVD rom and make sure that the install disk is clean and free of fingerprint smudges, then try to install again, one more thing to clean is the system memory, take it out and clean the contacts and slots with a soft, dry, clean paintbrush.
Do you have access to another internet connected computer that you can use to create a "slipstream" installation disc for XP. It will make your life a whole lot easier, and save hours if not days of downloading updates. Please read this article, and if possible, follow its instructions. http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp3_cd_final.htm
Also, be aware that you can download all the original drivers from the Gateway web site if you use the serial # to look them up. The serial number is usually on a sticker on the side of the front of the tower near the CD drive. If you don't have the original CD with Drivers written on it, you may have to download these in order to get back online, etc once you load the OS.
Put the winxp cd in the drive. goto start settings control panel, add remove programs, left side add/remove windows components, if accessories is checked then paint, calc etc are installed.
if acc. is checked goto start search/ files and folders/ all files and folders, type in accessories search c: drive select accessories folder location c:\documents and settings\all usersopen folder and link to paint, calc etc will be there.
