Hi Vincent:

Motherboards are built to match specific case (chassis) layouts. I've seen many instances of proprietary motherboards (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) being different then the exact same motherboard that the manufacturer makes available to the non-proprietary market.

When purchasing a motherboard for personal projects, I've paid special attention to ordering the correct board (same model number, same printed code on the mobo, etc.) and I've still gotten the wrong board --> it's just one of those things that happens when you deal with purchasing hardware over the Internet.

As far as modifying the Mobo goes...I wouldn't recommend trying it - it's likely that you won't be able to (even if you're pretty handy with soldering and chasing down pin-out connections using schematic diagrams) - I've tried and failed more then a few times - and I have more then a few years of electronics experience under my belt and some formal electronic engineering training to boot!

You're better off returning the board and ordering another one - or...if that's not possible, ordering a different case (they're usually less then $100 if you purchase them online).

Hope that helps...

- Lou

    Vincent:

There should be two different IDE Ribbon cables (grey, flat cables) in your PC - Unless you've got a system with Serial ATA (SATA) devices - in which case, you'll have the smaller SATA cables.

IDE Ribbon cables can have one or two square drive interface connectors on them - if your hard drive interface cable only has a single square connector on it, you can purchase another double-interface cable for very cheap online or in most tech stores. You can only place 2 devices on a standard IDE ribbon cable.

The "Slave & Master" jumper settings on modern hard drives are not typically used much anymore. Most modern IDE configurations make use of the "Cable Select" jumper option. This is commonly listed as "Cable" or "CS" on the HDD near the jumper block on IDE cables.

Cable Select lets the position of the HDD on the cable dictate which drive is master and which is slave. Most IDE ribbon cables have a "Drive 0" and "Drive 1" or "Master" and "Slave" printed right on the ribbon cable - Drive 0 would be your Master, and Drive 1 would be the slave.

If nothing is printed on the cable - Ususlly (unless you get a funky cable) - the drive closest to the motherboard is the Master, then the one on the end of the cable (furthest from the MoBo) is the slave.

I wouldn't recommend trying to mix a DVD drive with a Hard Disk Drive on the same IDE ribbon cable - it can be done, but some system don't like this and there are performance considerations - depending upon your HDD conroller, the IDE Bus can dumb-down to the lowest common denominator (if your DVD drive is a slower technology then your HDD, the HDD will perform slower).

It's normally better to keep removable media devices (CD / DVD / etc.) on one IDE cable and HDD's on another.

As far as the CD or DVD Audio cable goes - you won't typically need that (most don't even come with external audio cables anymore) - that's an old-school connection that's no longer needed on modern MoBo's.

Hello :) we have the same problem regarding the same brand and product. But I got mine working just a while ago.
Try this: Control Panel>Pen and Touch
under pen options, there should be settings regarding the pen buttons. Unclick the "use the pen button as a right-click equivalent"
hope this helps though although it's been a year XD

Compaq Presario CQ50 + over sensitive touch pad

Try the mouse settings in the control panel, also try uninstall any touchpad software and remove any touchpad software from running when the pc boots.
To do this either type msconfig into the run/search box or a program like cc cleaner under tools/startup

The drivers for the device may be corrupted or uninstalled. Please update/reinstall suitable drivers using the drivers cd (supplied by compaq) and restart your system. This will definitely solve your problem.

Scroll sections on mousepad not working

It's not working because it's either not enabled in your control panel any more, or the driver that allows the scrollbars to be used is not installed. This will happen if you've formatted your computer, or tried uninstalling software you didn't think you needed.

All you have to do is go to Compaq's website, enter the serial number of your computer in the search box, and you should find a Drivers and Downloads type section that will contain a list of all the drivers your computer needs, including the one for your mousepad.

Problem with NVidia GeForce4 MX 4000.

Hi!
Your old Rage Pro is an AGP 2x, where the Nvidia is an AGP 8x.

The Nvidia is probably not compatible with your motherboard.

Also, I think Nvidia needs much more than 320 Mb ram.

Scroll sections on mousepad not working

almost certainly this means that the drivers for the touchpad have reverted to the windows generic drivers. Try the driver from Compaq here. Sadly, without knowing the OS and exact model number of the laptop I can't be more specific on the link than that. The exact model of the laptop is usually printed on a sticker on the bottom.
