SOURCE: Bios default password

The BIOS default password is just blank, and it is not asked.

When you set a bios password, you are asked to enter a value, therefore if bios is asking the password, the password had been changed.

To reset the bios password if you do not know the password you need to access to motherboard and temporarily remove battery for few seconds.
Removing battery will reset bios and delete the password.
Unplug power cord before accessing the motherboard, and try not touching the motherboard with your finger.
Put battery back in place before restarting computer.

SOURCE: reset bios to factory settings in dell optiplex

Hi,

The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Optiplex by removing the password jumper (PSWD) from the motherboard.
Can click the link below to see how its done or follow the steps below :--
http://support.dell.com/support/systemsinfo/documentation.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~subcat=87&~cat=12

Choose the desktop model and continue.

For most Dell Optiplex desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.
Else can follow Optiplex User Guides.

Hope it helps !!
Thanks.

the reason why windows won't reconize it as a boot drive is because you have to format the harddrive to NTFS. You have to connect it as a secondary drive on another machine and format it. To do this you have to
click on start, right click on 'computer' and click on 'manage'. Once on 'computer management' click on 'disk management' and select the disk you want to format, right click on it can click 'format'.
Hope this helps.

Depends on whether it is a windows password or a bios password. For windows password try OPH crack. It is free. Bios password would need to come from Dell to registered owner or there are companies online that will crack it for a fee.

Reset the CMOS by unplugging your Optiplex from the power cable & removing the CMOS battery.
The CMOS battery is just a larger "watch battery" about the size of a nickel. Remove it for a few seconds, put it back in & power it back up. This will reset the BIOS password & restore all the BISO settings to default however.

BIOS should not be passworded unless you are not the original owner. I have never seen it set by default. Some equipment use 0000 as the default but that is usually bluetooth and wireless equipment.

Bios password removel of Dell Optiplex GX280

If you don't know the BIOS password, and need to access it - you'll have to unplug the AC power then open the case and remove the lithium "coin" or "button" battery from the motherboard. Wait 5 - 10 minutes (allows the capacitors to discharge) and replace the battery. This will RESET all BIOS values to default.

Restore AC power reboot. Enter the BIOS and change the values as desired. To access the BIOS, Press the F2 function key repeatedly during boot sequence. You may need to plug the USB keyboard into a different USB port if it doesn't let you in to the BIOS page.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.
