Question about Dell Inspiron 600m 1.6GHz Pentium M Notebook (162891033) PC Notebook

Open Question

Why doesn't my Dell 600m recognize a PATA IDE SSD?

Yes, it's a few years old but runs well, especially programs that won't run in Vista or 7. Currently have a 40G HDD and was looking to install a SSD as it has no moving parts and would hopefully run a little cooler and faster. The PC recognizes the SSD via USB bridge - the SSD is formatted and active - but BIOS doesn't. Only possible boot choices are internal HDD (does not see two when connected via USB), CD/DVD or USB device. Baffled. Any suggestions? I know it's been done, but can't find any instructions on how to alter CMOS or BIOS.

SOURCE: Dell 9200 desktop. New motherboard,

1st question... does the cd-rw recognizes (read) standard cd's... if so it just a driver prob.. if not then find the incidence of the device in the Device manager, delete it and restart thecomputer. Also.. you may go to the dell website and re install any available driver. One last measure... rare but sometimes the connection are loose and not seated properly..

Turn off the computer, unplug, open case push on ALL the connectors and are seated..(including memory)....

If all that fails then its a bad drive... also rare but a lot more common with mass produced comp. It may still be under warranty and at worst ;you may have to pay ship and handling.

pleas email and notify fixya if this helps.

SOURCE: dell e1505 is not recognized

Hi,

You mentioned that the “Devicemanager always shows the DVD ROM in error state”, by this I’m assuming that ithas a yellow exclamation on it.

Follow the steps below todelete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values with Registry Editor, this willmost likely fix you issue.

"Click the Start button,click Run."
"In the Open box, typeRegedit, and then click OK."
Click the plus sign (+) nextto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
"  NOTE:When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand displayingthe folders it contains in the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor. When afolder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-hand pane ofthe Registry Editor. "
Click the plus sign (+) nextto SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) nextto CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) nextto Control.
Click the plus sign (+) nextto Class.
Click{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
"On the right hand sideof the window, click UpperFilters (if available)."
Click Edit on the menu bar.
"Click Delete, and thenclick OK."
"On the right-hand sideof the window, click LowerFilters (if available)."."
Click Edit on the menu bar.
"Click Delete, and thenclick OK."
"Click File, and thenclick Exit."
Restart the computer normally.

One these steps are done youwill notice that the yellow exclamation has disappeared. And the drive will belisted in “My Computer”, is you still have problems with playing the video, theissue is with the DVD MPEG2 Codec. Download and install Klite Codec pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=5075&s=775. This will definitely fix any playback issues.

Hope this helps. Please rateyour feedback!
Thanks,
VJ

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

SOURCE: I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 which is running windows xp pro. I have 2 Gigs of memory, the computer runs ok, but I'm receiving info from scans that my HDD Pata is about to go,I'd like to change

Well, you will want to open up the side of your computer and see if there are SATA ports on the motherboard. They look like this:

10_25_2012_6_50_53_pm.jpg
Though they may not be blue.

If there are SATA ports on your board, you are in good shape. Just buy any SATA hard drive (SATA2 and SATA3 are backwards compatible) and connect it with the SATA connector and a SATA power connector from the power supply. Don't be afraid, these can only plug in one way without forcing them and only SATA plugs will fit.

After that, there are a variety of drive cloning programs you can use to clone your current hard drive onto another so that you don't lose anything.

If you don't have SATA plugs on your motherboard, it is easily remedied. You can buy a PCI SATA card for quite a reasonable price like this one:

You will also probably need a small adapter like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189121
To convert a molex plug into a SATA power plug.

After you plug in the card and the new hard drive, run the driver CD for the SATA add-in card and then run a cloning program.

This is a little bit long shot, but check also if there is an updated firmware for the SSD (you will need access to another machine in order to upgrade it). I will look up if I find either a bios for the Dell that is working or another solution

I have an asrock 775vm8 motherboard. Can I install a ssd drive?

Yes, your motherboard should have 2 SATA ports, however, the SSD won't perform as fast as it could in a newer motherboard. You'll also most likely require a power adapter (molex to sata).

Hi, I have destop[ dell pentium R 4 cpu 3 GHz 1.99 GB of ram and 40 GB rom . I want to now if can change the hard disk and put another of 160 GB. tanks you carlos.

A) If you have the Restoration Disk (CD), or a full installation disk of the Windows operating system, the answer is yes.

B) If you have an image backup program, such as Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, or DriveImage XML, for example, the answer is yes.

The Windows operating system is copied over to the new harddrive.

It would be easier, and more cost effective to just install the 160GB harddrive as a Slave drive.

I don't know if your harddrive is an IDE (PATA) unit, or a SATA unit.

Here is more information on installing either an IDE harddrive, or a SATA harddrive, as a Slave drive in a desktop computer,

1) IDE {PATA} harddrive:

1A) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMTOgt3UiB4

2) SATA harddrive:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCgFYNLzn18&NR=1

IDE, also known as PATA is the older style of technology.
SATA is the newer style.

(Parallel ATA
Serial ATA )

The beauty of SATA is not only the faster speed, but if you connect a SATA cable (Data cable) to ANY SATA connector on the motherboard, BIOS will find the device.

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) will find the harddrive with the operating system on it, first.
Then it will recognize that you have a second SATA harddrive also.

(BIOS looks at both SATA harddrives.
When it finds the one with the operating system on it, BIOS will disregard the other SATA harddrive)

I want to install a Super Talent IDE SSD drive in my Dell D610 but it won't recognize the drive.

Hmm, did the drive come with a few pins to be used? The pins, when attached correctly would make the SSD either slave or master... it could be that currently its set as slave, hence the BIOS would make some problems... have you tried that?
