Assembling a cp828 ratchet

Hi! I am reassembling a Chicago Pneumatic CP828 air ratchet wrench. When screwing the two halves together, the throttle handle winds up on top instead of on the bottom like it should be. I have three questions: (1) Should I put loc-tite on the threads and stop tightening when the throttle is on the bottom like it should be? (2) If I do that, I haven't completely tightened down on the air motor in the bottom casing.... will it spin inside the casing when using the wrench? (3) Should I be doing something else when assembling it?? Thank you! Nick

I have an old Chicago Pneumatic 3/8 air ratchet. It appears to be a CP 886 or CP 828? I hooked it up the first time and it started up without the handle being pushed down? Air comes out of the top and...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. I apologize for the much delayed response but I was helping another customer and your post appeared after I answered that post so I am going to respond now.

You will have to determine the part number of your Air drive.

The seals are dried out and cracked. Also the spring for the trigger is probably broken or the plunger is stuck down.

The CP828 parts can be found here:
The parts you probably need are items 3, 5, 7, 30 and 34. Possibly even item 109. That just repairs the trigger. You still need to repair the motor and head. See item 800 of the link for the repair kit. $33.75 Also note what item numbers above are in the kit.

The repair kits can be also located here: Notice there are several versions of the CP air motors. I send this link because there are three types of ratchet heads and it lists both the CP828 and CP886 repair parts.

You should be able to breathe life back into this thing with just a repair kit.... and possibly a few other trigger parts.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

I have a CP 828 3/8" air ratchet it turns but has no power and I have 100 PSI behind it. I have always oiled it. Can you please help me. Thanks, Rob

If you oil it regularly you may need to replace the veins inside the motor. When you do this be sure to check the bearings on each end of the motor. Also check the exhaust and inlet screens to make sure they are not clogged.

I have a neiko 300/1200 PSI burst 3/8 air hose. Is there a piece i can buy to attach at one end to act as a splitter for dual hoses?

Last I checked they dont make a splitter. However if you just go to HD or Lowes buy 1 male and 2 female fittings. Be sure they are the same size of the ones you already have. you will need a brass t piece and the threaded couplers to put it all together. Talk to the tool guys there and they will hook you up.

good luck. Dont forget to post satisfaction

Hi, you should be able to get a kit from Chicago Tools and rebuild it on your own. Try going online to see and order it from them.

Cant find uk parts supplier.

clarks 3/8" air ratchet is only about £20 there not worth fixing them, if its stuck and wont turn tip a drop of thin oil in it then give it a good blast of air, this may get it going for you, nobody ever thinks of putting oil in them when they use them, they just dog them to death first, but im glad to say there very cheep to replace,
