Are you using a ribbon made for the dtc300? there are some ribbons made for the other unit that look the same.

also, you might want to try updating the firmware.

Anytime she goes to print a badge the ribbon breaks. It's the correct ribon. She's put in a new ribon and the same thing happens.

When the ribbon keeps breaking on fargo DTC300 or any similar models (the ones that share similar mechanics) three steps are to be taken.

1- Verify, clean, calibrate or replace the ribbon sensor (maybe you'll see an error like "Panel Searching" that means " the ribbon sensor can't read the ribbon panels normally).

2- Clean the "card path" (the feed and platen rollers) for dust dirt and debris using the manufacturer's cleaning kit (or a clean
lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol) and the "clean printer" option.

3- Clean the inside and outside of the printer (pay attention to the printhead) with dust-off, lint-free cloth, isipropyl alcohol and enjoy.

Or, for more advanced ts take it to a certified tech!

Screen reading wrong ribbon - had the same ribbon in it since the last printing.

My DTC300 printer has the same problem.

The ribbon supply roller is driven by a small motor connected via an O-ring belt. The printer rolls the ribbon back and forth to locate the start of each color panel on the ribbon during printing and ribbon detection. Without the O-ring, the ribbon only moves toward the take-up spool, eventually going slack so that the color detector only sees one color - hence the "wrong ribbon" message. In my printer, the slack ribbon also gets chewed up in the print head.

You can order a whole belt kit (~ $20 + shipping) or you can locate a generic O-ring belt (1.8mm x 26mm).

Cheers

Panel Searching

Common problem with the DTC300, C30, DTC400. Upgrade the firmware and printer driver from Fargosupport.com. Then calibrate the ribbon sensor through the printer driver calibrate tab.

Fargo DTC400 is giving me "INVALID RIBBON" error

I think you or your machine have answered your own question. The machine said it isn't going to use the 300 ribbon and that is that.

I dont have experience with your particular model but I can tell you a Ford starter will not start a Chevrolet automobile.

I think you should take the 300 ribbon back and get a 400. If they wont take it back, trade somewhere else.

So, what do you say?

Replace Ribbon Sensor

I use a Fargo DTC300 and a Personna C30 and have replaced this part a no. of times as it seems to be rather sensitive to dirt contamination (we use our printers working in tents at aoutside events and they do have a rather hard life).

The process of dismantling the printers is quite straightforward but is also quite inticate and I would only advise tackling this job if you are used to taking apart items such as laptop computers as much of the work is very similar. There is also a significant risk of altering the printhead set up when doing this work and so rendering the printer unusable - I was only forced into doing these repairs as we were working over a weekend and could not get an engineer out.

At the end of the day it may be best to have the replacement carried out by a qualified dealer?

Press Menu, * 2864. That puts in in maintenance mode. If it flashes error 48, the flat ribbon to your head is broken. You'll need to replace the entire head assembly. Press 99 to leave the maintenance mode.
