Question about Hitachi 43FDX01B TV

1 Answer

Hitachi 43FDX01b: Green Flickers (causes screen to get bright and then dim)

I have a Hitachi 43FDX01b tv with a couple of issues.

Originally, the screen was very blurry and shaking. After I replaced the two stk392-110's with two stk392-150's, it seemed to correct the shaking, but anything with green color was still blurry.

I took the board out a second time, checked the solder joints on the IC's and touched up where I thought it needed it, and I also took my multimeter and checked the 1 watt resistors ranging from

  • 1.5, 1.8, 2.2, 2.7, 3.3, 3.9 Ohms.
All of the resistors tested good. At this point, I hooked the board back up again. I did notice an improvement in the red when I checked it in convergence mode; however, blue is still has a wide band both horizontal and vertical (not sure if this is normal). Some greens now come in clear, but others are still blurry. Lastly, I've got a green flicker that affects the screen's will get brighter for a bit, then it will dim. This happens shortly after I turn on the tv and doesn't stop.

From what I've read on the internet, it is either that the new IC is bad, or I might have some bad solder joints, or there is a voltage issue. In particular, I really am not sure where to look in regards to voltage (other than the resistors I checked.)

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I have replace the 1 watt resistors (just in case)
I have replaced the STK392-150 with stock sanyo 110's --no the cheap knockoffs

Putting in the 110's made the picture much more clear; however, I'm still experiencing an issue with the Blue Horizontal, Blue Vertical, Red Horizontal, and Red vertical becoming much thicker and blurry after the set has been on for about 5-10 minutes. It's still better than when the 150's were in, but not where it should be. I think the green is affected as well, but I haven't gone into Service Mode Convergence to check.

Also, the green flicker doesn't start right away now, but still does happen after a few minutes. I can see a green hue in Video 1, 2, or 3 (with nothing connected to the tv) with the screen intermittently becoming brighter then becoming darker.

My conclusion thus far is that the issue is either 2 separate problems or 1 single problem causing everything.

    2 separate issues (theory):
    1. Wide color convergence bands
    2. Green flicker due to possible bad Green CRT)

    1 single issue (theory):
    1. There is a voltage issue occurring in the circuits downstream after convergence is processed through the 110's or some sort of power issue.

Almost forgot to mention. It can't be a heat issue with the 110 IC's because I have a 120V fan pluged into a wall and blowing directly on the heatsink. Both IC's and heatsink are cool to the touch.

So far I haven't found anything on the internet that remotely hits this issue.

The TV was manufactured in February 2002

How would I adjust the screen volts for each CRT.

I have removed the front panel and tinkered with the dials on 2 of CRT's previously (when I had the STK392-150's in), but ended up moving them back to their original position.

The 3rd CRT doesn't have any dials or adjustments on it.

  • k_clem Nov 06, 2008

I tinkered with the focus block, but it didn't make a difference. I tried adjusting all 6 dials to see what I could do, but ended up with very minimal change.

On two of the CRT's, Red and Green, I am able to do an adjustment to turn red or green up or down. I don't have that ability on the Blue CRT. But still ended up with minimal/no change. Green CRT still flashes.

I really think there is a voltage problem with an IC (not the 110's) or resistors...or maybe a zener diode, but I'm not sure where to check.

    I have the service manual.

Do you have any suggested circuit areas I might check?

I've tested all of the resistors around the IC 110's and they read fine.

If you go to this link, it will provide the entire service manual for 43FDX01B (if it doesn't pull up right away, sign in as "guest" by clicking on guest login and searching for 43FDX01B under "model.") and click on">43FDX01B.pdf under "exploded view."

    My apologies on the delay.

I haven't had a chance to work on the tv for a few days.

I will provide an update soon.

    Thanks for checking back.

  • k_clem Dec 05, 2008

Sorry it's taken so long to respond back, I haven't been able to work on it until recently. I didn't realize that they close the thing out after 7 days if there's no response.

I will be testing it this weekend.

I've done some other testing on the tv.
I found out that all 3 colors are flickering and appear to do so at the same time.

I will test each one individually and let you know.

  • k_clem Dec 10, 2008

Just letting you know I'm working on it. Sorry it's going so slow.
(I have a wife and 2 kids under 3, so it's hard to get time to tinker)

It took me a while to figure out which plug was which. everything is pretty cramped on the crt guns and the labels are hard to see.

I'll try to post later tonight with the results

    I appreciate all the help.

How old is your TV?
TV has 3 CRTs and these can be weak in result / electron emission.
TV needs to adjust screen volts and focus of each CRT.

Please find Focus Block at front of tv, behind speaker cover / grill. Focus block will have 6 control knobs, top 3 for each (red-green-blue) CRT focus and lower 3 for Screen volts (G2 volt) for each CRT.
Its common part used almost all rear projection TVs. I don't have related model service manual so I just can give you an idea.

You need to get schematics of Hitachi 43FDX01B then you can sort out problem easily like measuring voltages, checking performance of each circuit in tv etc.

The picture is really dark even though I have the brightness set to a hundred percent

brightness isn't brightness, its technically called white level, as for the fault, probably a power supply issue, also turn the brightness down as having it set to high can cause long term damage to the tube.

Commercial skip/blackouts

Sounds like you're blessed to have a tv like that! Seriously: Some sets have settings that will cut down the sound during a commercial. Haveyou looked at your owner's manual? This tv may have setting to cut out the picture also when commercials come on. From a technical view point generally commercials have stronger signals than regular programming. This may be overloading your set. If this is the case, then you need to have it checked by good technician. A poorly operating power supply (not regulating properly) could possibly cause a problem like this. Also automatic gain control circuits could be not working properly. Stargazer
