Question about Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera

1 Answer

Canon EOS 40D shoots on its own.

When I start up the camera it will start shooting pictures rapid fire until I touch the shutter. Once I tap the shutter this stops, however, the focus won't work as everytime you tap the shutter the camera fires another picture. While it is doing this the number of pictures still on the memory card is flashing. The menu isn't avaliable during this either. If I change the shooting mode the menu is avaliable until I tap the shutter again. Then nothing will functhing appropriately.

Every now and then it will go into a mode where it won't shoot a picture. Even if you put your lens in manual mode it won't shoot a picture.

I have tried to change batteries, memory cards, and lenses with no luck.

My camera was out of warranty by one month. I called Canon and they agreed to fix it under warranty for me. The tech support seemed to think it is the sensor under the shutter. I haven't heard anything back from Canon yet. I know they recieved my camera on Monday, November 3rd. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Sounds like a software issue, try to upgrade or reload the firmware.

I hope it helps :)

I am currently experiencing a very similar problem. The camera isn't FIRING continually by itself, but rather is constantly acquiring focus (as if I were partially-depressing the shutter release over and over again). Because of this, I am unable to access the LCD playback or any form of menu EVER--hense, software/firmware updates are out for me (sounds like you can actually access the menus at sometimes, am I right Greg?).

I've sent it off to Canon for repair$, sadly. The cost will be the usual $200 Canon minimum, of course. I hope it stays near that total :)

Canon 40d will not take pictures

1) CF card in camera? Won't shoot without one

2) Does mirror go up?

3) Canon had a run of bad motors for this model - if mirror does not go up, then it is the mirror motor. If mirror goes up, shutter will not fire, press release again then the mirror goes down, the shutter motor is bad (same model motor). If mirror goes up, shutter fires, both blades travel together/no exposure, probably the shutter is bad.

Shoot 5 pictures and get error 99

There are over 40 different malfunctions that can cause an error 99 on a Canon 40D. The 2 that account for over 95% of the error 99's are either a bad shutter mechanism or a bad mirror driving motor. It takes special diagnostic software to determine the exact cause. Otherwise, a repairer just has to start replacing parts until the problem goes away.

Not shooting

Are you using a genuine Canon grip? I've experienced contact problems with generics. That's not to say that you couldn't have the same contact problems with a Canon grip.
