Dieseling as its called, can be caused by a few thing, carburetor or fuel injectors leaking into the cylinders after the engine is shut off. Also the ignition might not be shutting off all the way.Could also be a carbon build up in the cylinder, that will cause it to keep running on after its shut off, with fuel leaking into the cylinder.Check all of the ignition/fuel parts to see if they are operating normaly,Try to clean all of the fuel system,(ie)the fuel tank, lines, filters(might be more than 1 if fuel injected,1 in tank and 1 external, only 1 should be there if its carbureted.)Depending on which 1 you have be it carb or injectors, you can try some carb cleaner or throttle body cleaner to clean it.

Tip

Saturn S series runs rough

It is very common on ALL SATURN S series vehicle for ignition module failure. Usually the symptons are running rough and possibly a check engine light with misfire codes-P0300,P0301,P0302,P0303,P0304.
Some people have attampted replacing plugs and wires, even coils and continually have the problem reoccuring. What happens is the ignition module bolts(x4) stretch out through time and corrosion builds up underneath the module causing incorrect spark displacement. In turn this damages the plug wires and even at times the plugs. What needs to be done is replacing plug wires, plugs if needed, the ignition module bolts(saturn dealer item only)and the ignition module-NOT JUST THE COILS.
This should fix your problem.

here is a little help. if you need more I am on facebook. There are 2 ignition 1 voltage circuits supplied to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The first ignition circuit is provided by the powertrain relay, through a fuse. This ignition 1 voltage circuit supplies power to all the internal ECM circuits associated with the throttle actuator control (TAC) operation. The second ignition 1 voltage circuit is supplied by the run/crank relay through a fuse, and is used to power the remaining internal ECM circuits. If the ECM detects a voltage difference between the 2 ignition 1 voltage circuits, DTC

the 1993 chevy caprice had a 5.7 engine with distributor in which you need to adjust ignition timing with a timing light.the 1994 - 1996 vechicle timing controlled by pcm, your problem does sound like timing off.

Began running rough at start up and would correct itself after a bit. Now runnung rough all the time. Check engine light has now come on, but doesn't stay on continuously.

If the check engine light goes on for any length of time, there probably are codes stored in the computer that can give you clues as to what is wrong with the electronic engine controls, or mechanical parts on the engine.
Reading Codes 1985–94 vehicles Codes are displayed by the MIL flashing ON and OFF. The time duration of the flash identifies the significance of the digit. Three flash durations are used:
  • A flash duration of 0.5 seconds indicates no malfunction (OK).
  • A flash duration of 1.3 seconds indicates that it is a 10's digit.
  • A flash duration of 0.2 seconds indicates that it is a 1's digit.
For example, if 3 flashes — 1.3 seconds long — are followed by 4 flashes — 0.2 seconds long — a Code 34 is indicated. These code sequences are separated by 1.8 seconds to avoid confusing tens and ones digits.
  • Read Memory Mode: used to pull codes which have been stored in memory. It is most effective in detecting poor contact of wiring harness connectors. To enter this mode, connect the read memory connector with the ignition ON.
  • D Mode: used to diagnose and test the entire injection system. To enter this mode connect the test mode connector with the ignition ON. On the Legacy and SVX, the ignition must be ON with the engine running.
  • F-Check Mode: used to measure the performance characteristics of the injection system components. When working in this mode, a Select Monitor or equivalent scan tool is required.
  • U Check Mode: operates during normal engine operation. It signals the driver using the MIL only when components necessary for start-up and drive are faulty. The read memory and test connectors must be disconnected with the ignition ON for this mode to be operational.
Clearing Codes 1985–94 vehicles With the ignition ON and the engine running, connect both the read memory terminal and the test mode terminal

Stopped running 1991 caprice classic 8 cyl.

it could very well be the ignition module. i had these go out on a couple different vehicles before. whe the motor gets up to temp it will shut off and not start back up. it will start however after it cools down. if yours does this then that is your culperate. if its all the tim then id say your coil pack it bad.
