Kenmore oven model 977974890 won't shut off.oven elerment has bright red heat spot on right side

Our top heating element will not turn off unless we unplug the oven. When we plug the oven back in it turns on by itself.

I have the same problem. I was baking something at 425 degrees and then noticed that smoke was coming out of the oven. The temperature was definitely higher than 425 degrees. So I tried to turn the oven off and the heating unit continued to stay on. I tried unplugging the oven and then plugging it back in, but it didn't help. The oven will not turn off and the temperature is extremely hot (like it is in cleaning mode).

SOURCE: Error code E1 -F5- Broil element comes on and wont shut off

I just did the self clean option and when it was done I received the error code E1 -F5- and it does have to do with the door latch. After turning off the power to the stove I was able to open the door and wiggled the latch and that solved the problem.......

SOURCE: Kenmore electric range

The problem is caused by a shorted BROIL relay on the Electronic Oven Control board. I have experienced this problem before. The oven will continue to heat because it's being provided a constant power source. You are right to assume the reason for the oven temp error. This is common too.

Here's a TEMPORARY fix you can try:

1. Secure power to the range and remove the back panel from the console.
2. Unplug the BROIL element wires from the EOC and wrap them with electrical tape. It should be marked on the circuit card.

This will leave your broiler out of service, but you should be able to use the bake function. This should only be a TEMPORARY fix. The real fix is to replace the EOC. In the mean time, DO NOT leave the range plugged in while not in use (especially, if you are not going to be home, or while sleeping). This could be a definite fire hazard. If you post back with your model number (located around the oven door, or bottom drawer opening) I can give you an idea of how much the EOC would cost, and give you advice on how to replace it.

You need a new mother-board.

I had the same issue, it overheated my kitchen in a matter of minutes. If I didn't turn off the circuit-breaker, I probably would have had a fire - the heat being emitted was intense. The cost is running around $300. with tax and delivery. I'm not sure if I want to repair or purchase a new oven.

Kenmore ultrabake lights up when stove top is on but wont heat up

Hard to know...First thing I'd check is the power supply to the unit.  Turn off both breakers.  Check wiring all the way through for tightness.  Turn both breakers on.  Next, you'll need to check the elements for continuity...with the power off.
