Question about Memorex MP3225 Cassette/CD Boombox
When I press "play" on the cassette player, the entire machine powers off. I can power it up again and play the radio or CD player, but pressing play, FF or rew makes the machine shut down. I can't even think of any reason why this might be, except some short or something deep in the innards. Any suggestions?

If you hear a faint whirring sound from the cassette player while performing these functions, the motor is fine, but you require a new drive belt/s that need to be fitted at an electronics shop. If you hear not sound at all, the motor has died (possibly belts too), again it will require and electrinics repair shop visit.
For the sake of repairing it, it maybe cheaper to buy a new one.
