If the fuse is blowing before the battery is installed to charge, the problem lies on the circuit board. Since it is most likely a switch mode supply, you might try replacing the electrolytic capacitors first. Then check what should be a MOSFET, although some may have a regular bipolar transistor as well.

If the charger blows the fuse when the battery is installed for charging, the battery has some shorted cells that overloading the charger, or the contacts are distorted and being shorted by the battery

Thermostat fuse keeps blowing

The fuse protects the transformer from being damaged due to too much amperage, this is typically due to the circuit having a short or a device in that circuit being shorted.
See below the transformer's relationship to the thermostat.
The RED wire is the "hot leg" of the 24 volt power provided by the transformer to the thermostats R or RED terminal as pictured below.
The 24 volt hot leg enters the thermostat on R or RED.
The various other terminals White = heat, Yellow = cool ,
Green = fan and Common is the side of the 24 volt power source that every 24 volt circuit terminates or return to complete the circuit.
Thus the common name designated, note hoe everything returns to Common.
Well if we jumped Red directly to Common that is a short and will blow the fuse as you observe.
See the 2 diagrams in red describing a notrmal circuit then a short circuit.

The charger blows the 3.15a/250v slow blow fuse the second I plug it in... what can I do to get the charger working again?

check that you have the red lead of the charger on the positive terminal of the battery and the black lead on the negative terminal of the battery. Next check the voltage to be charged is selected correctly 6 volt or 12 volt. next check the rating of the fuse used as 3.15 amp may be too low for the charger. I would not go greater than 5 amp at best. Lastly have the charger checked by an accredited electrician for internal shorts.

The control fuses keep blowing tells me one or more of the control that operate the control on 24 volts is malfuctioning. Most controls operate at about 5 watts and on a clamp on amp meter normally pull about 0.2 amp (p = current x voltage, 5 watts = 0.2 amps x 25 volts) I install 75 watt 24 volt transformer with a resettable overload to save on fuses. I reset the transformer and quickly go to the controls and determine the amp draw. When I find the one >0.2 amps I found the problem. The things to check is the emergency heat sequencer, fan control sequencer, reversing valve for heat pumps, main contactor on the condensing unit and any other 24 volt control loads. I have had to replace the themostat wire because the increase current for the thermostat wire can cause the entire length of wire to form a long heater and cause insulation degradationa and cause the thermostat wire to short out and blow the fuses.
Hope this helps

I have an elesis RA 500 it blows the slow blow fuse when i plug it in .any ideas what is wrong?

hi there,
it sounds like the internal transformer has gone.
It's not user replaceable and will require you to take to an electronics store to be repaired.

SAME THING RECENTLY HAPPEN WITH ONE OF MY BITS OF KIT ...... for heavens sake don't just keep changing the fuse time and time again.

Powered Subwoofer repair--- Transformer issues?

Well yes transformers do fail and the transformer does say it has an internal fuse fitted which might have failed. The fuse on the board blowing is an indication of overload. The fact it didn't blow again shows that it is not getting any power or the fault has gone (doubtfull).
I doubt the transformer is a step up. But follow the circuit on the pc board till you come to electroytic capicator. This will have a voltage on it. The power level will be no more and perhaps less than the voltage on the capacitor. Another clue to the power level is if the secondary wires are narrower than those that go to the mains. That will indicate that less voltage comes out.
OK what to do. Well most makers say that the transformer is a safety item so it has to be replaced with the same type or one which is approved by the maker. So you can either contact the maker direct or find a service center, (for the brand) which might order you a replacement, or take the transformer to Radio Shack with details of the model number of the Sub, and see if they can get it for you. While there have a look at the multimeters. You should find one that will help you for all your future needs. I recomend one with a scale (rather than a digital). They are some around for £10 to £20 (I know you live in the USA but you can convert it) that will do what you might need it for.
The first thing to do if you get a meter is check with the ohm setting diodes or bridge rectifiers for shorts. IE: as if you had touch both probes together! Also do the same with any transitors you might find. As this could be the cause of the fuse blowing, and even the transformer's failure.

Charger not powering up, fuse is good?? what the f---?

Internal board fuse checked? This may/may not help?

Makita 1850 battery charger FIX. A friend asked me to check his charger unit which had failed after it had been connected to a portable petrol generator that incorrectly generated 317 Volts AC and not the usual 240 Volt AC. On the charger circuit board next to the transformer wire connection is a component marked F2; this is a 2.5Amp fuse covered with heat-shrink sleeving. This fuse had ruptured/blown. Also blown was Transistor Q1, a ''P'' Mosfet labelled IRF9Z24N and Schottky Diode D9 labelled SR560. Replacing these 3 items got the charger working again. NB Resistor R31 is only 0.1ohm - don't assume it's gone short circuit! NB. I'd presume that most other Makita chargers will have this heat-shrink sleeving ''camoflaged'' fuse on the input of the circuit board and it would definitely be worth checking if the charger has stopped working. One unit runs a while, powers down, other unit blows transformer

you say it keeps blowing the transformer? you mean circuit breaker? if it is the circuit breaker, have the wiring checked for a short, if no short do a ohm test on the compressor. it may have shorted out internaly.

Charger no light and wont charge

Sorry to give you my opinion, but these chargers are very delicate, I have 4 and can barely keep 2 going. My recommendation? Open it up and look for obvious shorts/loose wires, if no luck then buy another one and return the busted one as if it were the new one. You will end up with two working chargers. PS this is probably fraud...ha!
