Re: linksys to homeportal
In addition to Markeds answer this is because teh LInksys wireless router does not have the capability to connect wirelessly to another router. Computers can connect to it but it in turn cannot cnonect to another device wirelessly unless you use a wireless bridge but that will slow teh connection down considerably

First thing to do here is to reset the unit by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds while power is ON , after that if still the same better to contact your ISP or the manufacturer of the device and have it replace..
how bout customizing the wireless settings of your 2wire first for a more stable connection. like change the wireless name from it's default and enable a wireless security. you can also change the wireless channel to minimize interference from other wireless device near your area.
if you have done that already, try to upgrade the firmware of your router to check that it's not a firmware issue.
if you have done everything to solve your concern, it's better to get a replacement.
i believe your home portal is a gateway. if so, you also need to have a gateway to replace it and a router is not sufficient.
as long as your laptop has a wireless card installed, you don't need any other equipment
hope this'll help you.
first insert your pcmci linksys card into the laptop, you would find a found new hard ware screen, insert the setup disk, and then follow the steps, automatically your card would be installed, once the installation is done, the wireless adapter , would detect wireless signal, try connecting to the wireless network.. if it asks for any key, look at the bottom of your 2 wire router you would find a 10 digit number, enter the number as the number as key code or password, automatically you would get connected.. if case if you have any problem , revert back ..
DSL uses PPOE, which may be different than what you had previously. Cable, for example, uses TCP/IP. Re-set the router to defaults, and follow the instructions for PPOE, which should be in your manual or setup disk. Your ISP may have this info on their site, or you can get it at the Netgear site: www.netgear.com
