If the old one is still conected you can connect it the same way if not here is how to::

Well firstly they are 2 types IDE (large connector) and SATA (small connector)

IDE

of an ide cable has 3 jacks 1 for the main board and 2 for IDE drives
2 drive must be set to master and the other to slave
Set the drives by using the jumper on the back the instructions are written on the drives
Connect the Ide Cable and then the power and turn you system on

IF ITS SATA
connect the sata cable to both hard drive and main board
connect the power cable and your done!!

NB:: sata ports are labeled SATA 1 SATA 2 etc

IDE are LABELED IDE 1 IDE 2

Ide is a large grey cable black connector SATA is usually orange or red and small

Old computer with windows xp won't boot - how can I get the data off the hard drive by hooking it up to my new computer with windows vista?

You should be able to put the old hard drive in the new computer and connect it as a secondary drive. That all depends on the type of interface the new computer is using. Most new computers use SATA inferface for HDD now. You're old drive might be IDE. in which case you can't add it to new computer unless it also has IDE interface on new MB. If no IDE interface on new MB, you can use USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter Cable from Cablestogo.com to connect your old drive via USB.

My computer refuses to recognize the external hard drive what do i do

Hello there,

What type of OS are you running ( Windows # )

What type of motherboard

Here is what i would do to start off with,

STEP ONE - Check all connections
  1. Unplug the USB data cable from the drive and the computer.
  2. Check the ends of the USB data cable to ensure that they are not damaged.
  3. Reconnect the USB data cable to the drive and the computer. Check the connections to ensure that they are secure.

Note: If you have a Portable Hard Drive with a 2-line USB/power cable, connect both the data line and the supplemental power line (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) to USB ports on the computer. If the status light on the drive glows steadily, the drive is receiving power. Go to step E.
  4. If you are connecting an Iomega Desktop Hard Drive, check the power supply connections to the drive and power outlet to ensure that they are secure.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Double click the Computer or My Computer to see if the Iomega Hard Drive is detected.

If the Iomega Hard Drive is detected, you can now use the drive.

If the Iomega Hard Drive is not detected, please try another USB cable and/or power supply (if available). If the Iomega Hard Drive is still not detected, continue with the next step.

if that doesn't work go to this helpful site and follow the Steps one by one to fix this problem

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

Most of the time, "self-inflicted" damage is EXCLUDED from W.D.'s "warranty" for the drive.
So, it depends on your sense of "ethics" whether to file a warranty-claim.

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

If the problem persists, either:

* the USB cable is damaged,

* inside the enclosure, the disk-drive is not functioning
(although the lamp indicates that it is getting electrical power)

* inside the enclosure, the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed.

If the warranty is still valid, W.D. will replace it, at no cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; buy a new unit from their web-site, and you can get a discount, as a previous customer.

Or, open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it is working at all.

Or, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and mount it into the enclosure, to make a "new" external disk-drive.

Is there a site that will tell me how to use my new iomega eGo portable? I need to get instructions as the one page with it when bought told me how to connect but not how to use it..

Once it is connected, it should show up in your My Computer folder as a removeable drive. You use it like your hard drive on your computer to move and copy files to. Just open your hard drive on your computer, select the files you want to copy or move to the new drive and right click on the selection, click on the send to option on the menu and it will be one of the options to send the files to.

I have just installed the Seagate 320GB external hard drive and apparently successfully copied 10 picture files but cannot find how to view the contents to check that everything is OK

to view the contents of the drive connect it to the computer and make sure both are turned on and that the drive is detected by your computer (you get a ding sound when you connect it)

You should see the drive inside my computer, or computer, which you will find from either your desktop or from start menu.

Look for the drive in my computer, it will possibly be named as a removeable storage device, the contents should be inside.

If its a brand new drive it might need to be partitioned and formatted first before it can be used.

Sata support?

the easiest way to know this is opening up the computer with a philips screwdriver and verifying if you can see S-ATA ports on the system board. They look like the red and black connectors on the following picture: http://www.pcper.com/images/reviews/98/board_sata.jpg

if you can see those connectors, your system supports it. in that case, you just have to connect the disk (don't forget to connect a power connector as well, these connectors are mostly black)
